Quinalt Strawberries - weird and tiny

Hi all!

I planted Quinalt strawberries this year. I'm pretty sure this is the same kind I planted three years ago and had good results with, but I'm not 100% certain (those are all gone now). I just planted these about 2 weeks ago and they already have strawberries on them. However, they are a weird pointed, lumpy shape and are only about the size of my fingernail. They are dark red, come off the stems with almost no effort, are almost mushy (on the vine too long, I think) and very sweet tasting.

Anybody else had this? I don't want to spend the whole summer nibbling teeny tiny strawberries!!

I read somewhere that in the first year you can pinch off many of the first flowers to help the remaining strawberries grow larger. I haven't had to do this in the past, so would appreciate any advice. Thanks and happy growing!!

Sure sounds like a variety of Alpine strawberry. Is there a possibility you were given/sold the wrong type?

They must have sold you the wrong variety. I have Quinalts and they are big and fat and juicy, but not huge. Nothing small about Quinalts. Much bigger than my Sequoias.
I grew some Alpines a few years back and they are tiny, many no bigger than your baby fingernail, but vigorous and come back year after year. I wasn't pleased with them. Too much work to pick enuf just to top a dish of ice cream.

And they fit the rest of the description - really, really sweet, mushy if left on too long, and slide right off the stem.
