Gardens for Care Facilities

I thought I would start a new topic since Pappy built a TT for a nursing facility and posted a photo. Then, I started highjacking it with gardens at Memory care facilities with edible plants. Then Marc replied.

Assisted care facility residents (folks needing a little help bathing, dressing, maybe getting into wheel chairs for the day, etc) could have tomatoes, potatoes, etc. where the plant is not edible, because these folks still have their cognitive faculties. Memory care facilities are totally different. Very much like stepping into the Twilight Zone. I thank God that there are special facilities for these folks because their needs are so special. Once powerful or beautiful people descend into a confusing world, rapidly aging, with inappropriate behaviors, some dangerous to themselves or to others. A garden in a memory care facility would have to be totally edible. Supervision is a challenge, like herding cats. My Mother was in a supervised setting when she finally managed to undo her safety belt and tried to stand up. Within a couple seconds she had fallen to her knees and broke a femur in two and her pelvis in 2 places. Two (2) seconds! So, anything could go in the mouth, including MM.

Now back to assisted living, they could enjoy a combination of TT and a few flat beds for tall plants like corn and tomatoes, winter squashes or baby pumpkins. Potatoes, tomatoes, etc, could be grown.

What a clever idea! I just found out from the nursing home therapist, they have designated what they are calling "FARM WEEK". The Therapist will use farm week as part of their rehabilitation process. 
This could possibly become a nation wide movement. Speaking of movement, I'll catch you'all later.....
