Shipping for Top Hat Box?
I just tried to buy a top hat box for carrots, a grid, and some cow pots for a total of $33. When it got to shipping with UPS Ground, it went to $130...? Is shipping that expensive from the SFG site? Any suggestions for what I can use for a top hat box instead (I know I can build one, but I'm not that handy). Thanks!

Re: Shipping for Top Hat Box?
Lilperu, Welcome to the Forum! Those prices are horribly high! Maybe other members can help with suggestions, also.
Can you use a screw driver? Can you cut lumber or know someone who could do it for you? HD or Lowes may cut it to length for free or a small fee. What size top hat do you want to build? How tall? I'll see if I can show you in a pretend photo tomorrow. I do have cheap, easy grids I can photo. Tomorrow.
I built a plain book shelf for my kids with a saw, drill, tape measure, screws and screw driver. Beginning Girl Power!

Hi Lilperu.
Glad you've joined us!
You might check with your local high school to see if they have a woodworking shop/club. Maybe they could build it for you.

Re: Shipping for Top Hat Box?
Welcome to the forum. The world of shipping is crazy these days. Amazon can ship for free, but I need a second mortgage to ship family Christmas presents across the country!
Cut the bottom off an old bucket-instant top hat.lilperu wrote:...Any suggestions for what I can use for a top hat box instead (I know I can build one, but I'm not that handy). Thanks!

Take the bottom out of an old dresser drawer.

Re: Shipping for Top Hat Box?
As Boffer said cut the bottom off a bucket, or...flower pot, tote, etc. or take the bottom off of a wooden crate. Or instead of worrying about making something just plant your carrots in a bucket or deep planter, you won't need a top hat then. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Re: Shipping for Top Hat Box?
And if you're feeling lazy, carrots grow just fine in a six inch box. Sometimes they'll only grow as long as the MM is deep, but sometimes they'll make a 90° turn at the bottom and keep growing.
Determinate potatoes do just fine in 6 inches of MM. Just cover up any exposed potatoes with mulch so they don't turn green.

In my six inch beds I grow Danvers half long carrots. They seldom exceed 6 inches for me.
