I LOVE IT! My dad was always building stuff like this, and I miss having him around! I inherited the 'tool gene' as my sister calls it, but I do not have the metalworking skills that dad had, so if it is not made of wood I will have to dream on. Hmm, maybe the next time I am out at my sister's house I can snag the smoker my dad built (and the hibachi, and the wood stove, and...). Think Hubby would notice them stowed under the luggage in the back of the SUV sometime during the 3-day drive home?  rofl

GG - hehehe!  NO!  He wouldn't notice...!

Nice setup on that smoker.

Had a boss once with a homemade smoker.  He made it out of the top of an old silo.  Could fit 24 turkeys at the same time.  It even rotated for even smoking!

That's a thing of beauty. I loved smoked meats, cheese, vegetables, heck if you smoked a flip-flop, I might be inclined to give it a try Laughing . I guess that now's the time to start stocking up on hardwoods. Cherry and apricot are my favorite sources of smoke. Congratulations!

Look in the back ground it looks like it is some serious pipeline tube yard with a decent coded welder doing the welds .

Here is my converted brick built BBQ for cold smoking only . the smoke comes up from the lower part up through a hole in the floor in the slabs and exits through the bung hole in the cut down plastic drum , food is set on some wire racks under the drum . Note teh wine cork sized air flow holes in the lower part of the door to get just a wisp or a cloud of smoke going .

When the builder turns up , I hope he will raise the top walls to another 3 feet ( 900 mm0  tall & stick a paving slab roof over it , I'll put doors on it & some form of heat ( gas or electric ) to make it useable as a hot smoker or cold .

It looks light an amazing job. But, in total ignorance, I have to ask why the two levels, but no connecting air hole between them.

If you mean the first picture of the heavy weight steel construction jobby I guess they will use a plasma cutter to put some in or they could be hidden in the upper edge of the lower drum where it is welded to the big one. The lower drum is the fire box so not only can you cold smoke you can also hot smoke or oven roast depending on the fuel & air flow you allow .
having the fire box allows smoke to rise into the big drum easily
 .
The top two pictures show the BBQ as an unfinished steel  construct , the bottom of the three shows it with lids in position so it could well have the smoke rote implemented in that picture .

If it's mine there are smoke holes between the levels

Love your set-up Plantoid! I have toyed with the thought of building a brick or stone BBQ in the backyard... thinking

A pic from the builders's site showing the connecting hole.

Thanks, Boffer. I was so busy trying to catch up on the topics last night that I didn't take the time to open any links. I will have to hide this topic. A thousand years ago, DH had a brisket restaurant in Texas.  Very Happy
