Square Foot Shoes Empty Square Foot Shoes

Post  paul_vanderwerf 2/6/2014, 11:46 am

Hi,

I would like to wear a pair of square foot shoes. Even if I can't grow many vegetables in them, I'm sure I can grow into them rather well.

Being Dutch, I thought that wood would probably be the best frame for them. However, I am not going to use a wood grid. I thought it better to use the shoe strings for the grid.

This is such a logical use of the square foot method that I'm sure that others of you have done this in the past.

Is there anybody who can share their square foot shoe experience? If not, does anybody have any ideas that can improve my project?

Thanks!

Hi Paul. Sanderson from class yesterday.

I'm not quite sure to what you are referring. The grids for the boxes?  Very Happy

Surely, he's pulling our leg.  However, I am looking for something that has better tread than my Crocs and slippers.  It is getting very slushy and oozy here in Koke`e (I'm currently at our cabin here at 3500 feet.  I see ads for garden shoes. Anyone know of some that meet these requirements?

I use a worn-looking pair of white leather tennis shoes. The treads are still good so I can climb the ladder or step stool to tie up vines or harvest in my vertical areas. They were just too worn to wear in public anymore. I have them tied so I can just slip them on and off. The leather is somewhat water resistant.

For summer, I just bought some Croc sandles so I can wash them when they get dirty and sweaty. But, I have flat surfaces for most of my garden activities.

Hope some one can give you some help.

Serious or satire, I can't tell.  Either way, you lost me on this line:

I am planning on working at the San Francisco Flower Show next month, and I thought a one square foot shoe might make an impression on the kids. I'm thinking of maybe doing a paper mache over crocs - perhaps with a paper pulp cast for the form...

Perhaps take a pair of slip on shoes and use strips of water based glue paste & newspaper over foam sponge blocks which are cut out to fit over the shoes  to make the blocks around the shoe

( Damp the sponge first squeeze it out inside a thick towel to absorb the excess water then freeze it so it is easier to carve or grind out.

When you have the block of paper & glue over the sponge let it dry somewhere warm .

Use poster paints to paint it white then  add a set of painted on light brown & cream wooden sides & a dark colour for where the MM will go ..let it dry now spray varnish it and carefully sprinkle on some MM before the varnish dries , get some real veg ..small ones that you can cut holes in the blocks to get them to fit ....maybe baby carrots , baby leeks ,  radish , herbs & some small flowers .

When you make your ANSFG shoes put the foot holes close to each other instead of your feet being in the middle of each block , so they are close together so you don't have to walk with your legs a apart like you need clean pants. Laughing

You can also inflate a rubber party balloon to a larger diameter than your head , cover it in the paper strips with water based glue again say four complete coverings so it has a bit of strength.

Once it is dry stick a square of sticky tape on the balloon and pierce with a pin or needle it in the sticky tape area ..it will deflate slowly instead of going Bang!

When the balloon is out of the way cut the hat to the shape you want.

I made a Christmas pudding on a golden plate ( a rim of glue & paper  that I added later on ) I had to pack the inside with foam sponge so it would fit Munchkins head . She got second prize for an original Christmas hat.

It was very similar to an English traditional Christmas pudding covered in white sauce with a sprig of berried holly on the top . Could you run to having a melon , tomato or pumpkin on a plate  hat etc. made in a similar manner???

An artificial plant growing out of each would be a nice touch

This one might require a coat with a trellis attached!

re: plantoid - hmmm... I like the foam idea... perhaps some floral foam would work... then I could just add plants as needed... as for the location of the holes in the shoes... I'm blessed to be bow-legged, so that may not be a problem... I was thinking I'd probably just have to walk like I'm wearing stilts... I did the balloon paper mache when I was a kid, so the hat approach makes sense... I'm gonna have to think about having a realistic looking MM with real veggies... that could be a possibility too...
