Okay, you folks in the colder regions have been keeping us up to date on the weather and posting pictures of the snow.  We in the south now finally have the chance to show our stuff.  The above picture shows our snow last night.  Shut down the highways.  Took three hours to get home from work yesterday.  Had all of 2 inches.  What a bunch of wimps we are but we are just not used to these temps and rarely get this much snow.

Winter in the South Empty Re: Winter in the South

Post  littlejo 1/30/2014, 10:08 am

Sorry, camera's broke. No snow here, just ice. This is the very reason we live in the South!
It sure is a mess, so slick. I haven't checked my garden yet. I had cabbage, spinach, collards, peas. Onions and garlic of course, but they will be fine.
I've stayed home, in the house, except for feeding the chickens and collecting the eggs.
The chickens don't seem to be affected by the cold/ice. Still laying.
I have to check on my orange tree. It is in a pot, in the well house.
Roads are closed due to ice on the bridges. Supposed to get up to 40 deg today so the ice will melt and we will get back to 'normal' for us.

Yolos your garden looks a lot like mine, only mine has a few feet.
I read all about the highway issues, sounds like some people took 16 hours to get home.

Did anyone see the pictures of the pyramids in Egypt covered with snow?

Some people took 16 hours to get home.  Some never made it and slept in their cars.  There were 1500 accidents and 2000 abandoned cars.  We just don't have the snow plows and deicing equipment or dumb officials or too much traffic even without the snow.

Weather predictions are for a high of 64 degrees on Sunday so schools will resume on Monday.  They will be closed tomorrow (Friday) again.  So after 2 inches of snow the schools are closed for 3 1/2 days.

The officials down here don't know much about ice! We have one of those large cable bridges. It froze up and they kept salting the bridge. Finally the roadway was clear and the temp was rising, so they opened the bridge to traffic on Friday. Well, no one looked up at the cables. About 9:30, temp abt 56, the ice on the cables started to come loose, big 5 ft sections of ice came falling down onto cars, denting the cars worse than hail ever thought, breaking winshields, etc. 1 lady had windshield broke and got glass in her eyes. They had the bridge closed again by 10am. I think they opened it about 3:00, after the ice melted off the cables.

Winter in the South Empty Snowy south

Post  Windmere 2/2/2014, 9:09 pm

It was so nice to see the posts of my fellow southerners.  Yes, all that snow crippled our area.  On the flip side, I got to have a few snow ball fights with my daughter.  She also built a "snow lady."

My wife was looking over my shoulder as I was perusing compost from various sources.  She whispered next to me:  "And so it begins.... "  I had a good laugh at that.

Last year I worked with only black krim tomato seeds.  This year I am going to have to choose between about seven or eight varieties (I went nuts with seeds).  I have two 4x4's and ten Earth Boxes.  In the scheme of things.... that's not a lot.

However, I am really excited about getting ready for spring.  And hopefully we won't have the same crazy weather that we had last spring.

Well, the Great White North is coming our way again over the next 2 days.  The predictions for my area are 1 to 2 inches of ice.  North of Atlanta they are predicting snow.  Everybody learned from last weeks debacle and all the schools and many businesses are closing.  So maybe the deicing equipment will be able to do their thing without all the cars stranded in the highways.

The prognosticators are using terms for our weather tonight-tomorrow such as "historic", catastrophic, biblical".  So we shall see.

1 to 2 inches of ice is horrifying!  The last really big ice storm we had like that up here there were power outages in some areas for 10 days, as over 8000 power poles were literally snapped in half across the NE portion of the state.  We will be praying for all of you down there, and STAY INSIDE AND SAFE!!!

GG

PS - the one upside is that when it is over and the sun is shining, the ice is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!

Winter in the South Empty Ice Day??

Post  VJ72584 2/12/2014, 9:54 am

We have about three or four inches of snow in Darlington SC. They are forecasting 3/4 inch of ice next.  My brother and I made a very early run to the grocery store getting things for elderly folks we know. I thought the forecast was for icing starting about noon, so I was thinking we could work this morning. Even Burger King was closed when we went by.Hopefully the power outages won't be as bad as they are predicting. That's the only real concern.

Thanks. I think I am somewhere between sucker and softie.  On another note a local pastor posted this on facebook. I am really curious about how well it works. Still have power here but my brother near the coast is without. He says there are a lot of trees down.

I don't have any empty clay pots right now that would fit the size needed. Could you use it in a greenhouse?

Electricity just came back on.  Phone/DSL just came back up also.  Hope this is the last time the electricity goes out.  Frantically charging cell phone and electronic cigarette batteries in case it goes down again.

Looks like roads are icing over.  Probably no work again tomorrow.

I was thinking that maybe you could go bigger and get a larger pot and 6 inch pillar candles? Then again I heard curiosity killed the cat.  I'd like to test the small ones and see how much warmth there is.

I used the trusty garden hoe to hack thru the icy crust on the snow and get to my car this morning.  Ice is falling from the power lines and trees now, so maybe the worst is past.
