Oh yeah, I forgot to mention pomegranates. They are perfect fruit for any arid western state. They come from the hot middle east and adapt well to the Arizona climate. If you want to grow fruit they would be a good start. They are a very forgiving plant that will produce fruit consistently.

I started a pomegranate from seed spring 2012. It is in a small pot and is about 2 ft tall right now. Just can't decide where to plant it.

CapeCoddess wrote:I have a 'new' fig tree purchased in the spring.  It's called 'Brown Turkey' and can stay outside in winter here on the Cape.  It's about 3 ft by 3 ft now and I plan on keeping it smallish, no taller than I can reach.  Because I read that it produces more fruits if the roots are restricted, I planted it into a 2 foot round black tub filled with mostly compost, and it sits under my bedroom window.
Years ago the Boston Globe had an article about a Greek or Italian expatriate in Somerville (basically Boston for zone purposes) who had a fig tree and a grape arbor.  Come the cold weather, his entire family would help him upend, then walk the tree, in an enormous tub, into his basement.  There it stayed until spring.

Maybe it wasn't a tall tale.
