Some of my past was bad choices on my part, and some was stuff that was done to me when I was too young to have control of my own life, but all of it has made me who I am today, and I like who I am!

And often, both what was done to me and bad choices I made, I can draw on my past to help others, and that is a wonderful feeling, isn't it?

I will never forget my past, but as you so perfectly stated, I own it. I forgive those that erred, and, what took longer than that, I have forgiven myself, and embrace the understanding that I don't get to know what pieces of my past led me to where I am now. My life isn't perfect, but I wouldn't trade it for anyone else's, that's for damned sure!

Martha, I could NOT have said that any better!

You are so right.  And while I would have preferred that I gotten to that point before I did, I'm in a good place now.  That's what counts.

And that's what allows us to help others.

I have no regrets about where and who I am today, but that doesn't mean that some of the stuff that happened when I was younger, never should have happened. Definitely true of your background.

I did finally meet my birth mother and we had a great relationship. I was wanted, but there was nothing she could about it. She told me she thought of me every day. I have a wonderful half-brother and half-sister. It is just a shame that we were not brought up together. I would have been the oldest grandchild of my grandparent's generation, but only a few months ago when I contacted The Foundling Hospital to find out more of my roots, I found that there were good reasons that I was given up.  To be continued. . . .

I don't want to highjack this thread. Just another amen. When I was adopted by my step-daddy, it became the family secret because adopted kids were considered 3-legged back then. Thank goodness that kids today know from the get go. Younger folks don't realize what has changed over the decades. (PS: I was 33 when the black sheep of the family told me)

Sanderson, Sanderson, Sanderson. There is no hijacking of this thread! Anyone can be silly, or serious, reference something a few paragraphs back, or say something totally unrelated!

Okay, it's true. Nobody said I'm in charge of the rules of this thread or this forum, but I'm pretty darned confident that I'm right on this one!

Now back to your other comments - forget the social stigmatism of the times, I think it's great that your stepfather adopted you. Were you young enough that you knew him as your dad, or did you know there had been another one?

The continuing story of Kelejan Very Happy
After I got to know my birth mother, she told me the circumstances of my birth. In those days, she did not have a clue about s-x. She and a friend went on holiday to the seaside and they met two men.  My dad was one of them of course.  It was awkward talking about it, but she told me he was very charming so I can imagine how he won her over. You men! Anyway, she went home from the holiday and then of course it was noticed she was putting on weight. Upshot was that grand-dad-to-be went down south with the proverbial shotgun to confront the villain only to find that he was already married and had another child on the way.  So, mom was put on the list for The Foundling Hospital and was deemed not too tainted to have her baby brought up by the Foundation. To be continued. . .

I had my meeting and basically it is helping people downsize due to illness etc. and closing out houses due to bereavement etc.  Betty, my friend, made a presentation to a group of realtors yesterday and met with a very positive response. Betty had spent a couple of months downsizing  a friend's home and thought it a good idea for a local business.  So she now has business cards printed and we worked on a brochure to give to people. I am hoping that it takes off and she can increase her income and mine at the same time. A few hundred extra dollars a month would make all the difference to both of us.  Just a question to  get the brochures printed and handed out. Lots of things to think about and it is a business that will evolve. Betty is very excited to have someone to talk to and bounce ideas back and forth.
Just so long as I can get my gardening in from next spring.

Kelejan, What a wonderful business, helping folks through a hard process. Like a social worker with a specific physical goal at the end? Some times people have hidden gems that can be liquidated and the proceeds help the person. Other times, like a stack of National Geographic magazines, just needs to be put in the recycle bin. There are professional estate salespersons, but this sounds like it is helping a person through the emotional process at the same time. ??

There are several that include SFG - this is the link to one of them. Nice work, Sanderson!

I also like your comments about the emotional support angle of Kelejan's business. It is distressing for most people when they have to downsize - it tends to be a huge relief, but there are so many memories in the big house you have lived in forever, and there's the part about how many times is downsizing about getting older?

I know I have issues with that!

(And yes, it does beat the alternative!)

Kelejan, what a great idea!  I really hope it works out and works well!

Although, I must confess....  I'D take the National Geo's to the local nursing home!  I'm sure some of those folks would enjoy reading them or at least looking at the photos.

When my mom went thru all of their books, one guy at the local nursing home asked for the encyclopedias from 1960 that she had.  He wanted to read thru and see how things had changed, lol.

(Now - waiting NOT so patiently for the next installment...)

Heavens, I've never been more popular. How do people manage sudden fame or notoriety?

Trouble is I am writing about two subjects at once.

OK, business. My problem is that I am not very focused when trying to downsize my own stuff, e.g. I would probably read through the National Geographics before I disposed of them, read all the cards and letters that accumulated from long-gone friends and family before putting them back in their boxes, knowing that one day they would be disposed of by some one, possibly a stranger.
I know, if this business starts, that I will be much better at deciding if someone else's treasures  will need to be passed on or destroyed.
Today I am visiting our seniors' centre for morning coffee and I will broach the subject first of all in the little group I am inclined to sit with so as to see their reaction. Hand out a few cards etc. Also get in touch with the person who arranges occasional "talks" on any subject that anyone cares to bring up. My friend can do the talking, she is good at it. Very Happy
I have been eligible to join the Seniors  for the last 25 years but really my interests are not in line with most of their activities such as carpet bowling, craft sessions, darts, and sitting around the table gossiping; they are the first to help anyone who is in trouble so please don't think I am denigrating them, but we are all different.
I have paid my yearly membership so as to support them, and I can drop in for coffee whenever I am in the vicinity. Good coffee is 75 cents. Very Happy

The continuing story of Kelejan. . . .
Well, Grand-dad-to-be got the info with regard to The Foundling Hospital so mom-to-be duly turned up for an interview with the Board.  Mom passed the interview board that decided she was of good character and she was whipped off to the big city of London to spend the rest of the time until I arrived.  She was with several others in the same condition.  I arrived and she was able to feed me for about four weeks then left me to return home, with everyone assuming she had been visiting relatives etc.
When I was six weeks old she returned to London to hand me over to The Foundation.
She told me that, carrying me in her arms, she stood in this large room faced by a table of what seemed to be very old men, and admonished for her sins. She then handed me over, and received in exchange a  piece of parchment containing the words:
The Foundling Hospital etc.
13 April 1935  Baby V       (V standing for the numeral 5)
This parchment to be produced
when enquiring after
said baby.
or words to that affect.  She never saw me again until many years later.
When I met my mom, she gave me this parchment and that was when we talked about how I came about.
To be continued. . . .
