Getting all kinds of stuff! Onions, squash, cucumbers, carrots (these are from carrot week), keeping us, our family and neighbors in veggies! The girl scouts are coming over on Wednesday to tour our garden Smile

did you plant those from seed or from bulbs?....we tried bulbs a few times and ours never filled out....

Hi Rose, we planted them from "sets" I think they're called? Not bulbs, not seeds, but thin little almost dead looking plants?? We planted them late April, and they grew into this! They were in almost all shade under other plants LOL! All the "wrong" way to do it, but it worked?? Love it when that happens! All the other stuff we picked after only 3 days of picking the garden "clean". How is your garden doing?

Wow, those onions are gorgeous. I have been trying onions for 3 years and I have never had them get even big enough to post a picture. I finally figured out the short day long day problem and this year I also used the "thin little almost dead looking plants" and they grew to golf ball size. So I am going to try again, plant earlier in the spring and maybe get some in a spot that will get some shade later. Never give up.

ty Yolos! I just learned long/short day last year too! I was so mad, I bought some onions from a high end nursery, they SAID short day on the sign over the plants, I planted about 100 of them and got NO bulbs, I looked at the small tag on them and they said Long day Sad

All that time and effort wasted! In the mean time, these showed up in the mail, I had forgotten I ordered them LOL. Anyway, my 5 yo grandson and I stuck them in the garden in April and we got these beauties! It really does make a difference!! God bless!!

our gardens are doing well Very Happy

Just updated in PNW forum and the BTE thread with pictures....I love this time of year as it seems each day there is something to harvest and eat from the gardens....love it!!

Our sunflowers are outrageous!! So beautiful! We planted about 70ish? They're about 10 feet tall, you can't even see our house anymore! Had some fresh Rock Cod for dinner with fresh beets and carrots and Tromboncino squash!! Our Edamame beans are going gangbusters! Last year, they only grew about 5" tall and grew about one pod per plant, these are about a month old, and are 3 FEET tall! Beans all over the stems!!

My grandson harvested our Red Candy onions!! These were planted in late April. Boy, do they smell yummy!!

SG those candy onions look cheers

amazing!! we are trying to grow some yellow candy ones from seeds....they still look like little green onions....we were sure hoping they would do well for us.....we love our onions and this year we seem to be a bit short on them....we are going to plant more green onions to make up for it and they do seem to over winter good for us as its kind of late I think to try and get much of a larger type onions from starting seeds now.....we do have some New York onions that are doing well....hoping they will bulb up....they were suggested from Deb's as they do well for her and we are sort of close in the same area....

thank you Rose. We learned to be SURE to grow short day onions in our area, and use good soil! How do you do them from seed? I'd like to try again, I've always failed in the past. We have done fairly well with the little thin onion dead looking plants? Are they sets?? Love to hear back from you!!

SG we bought yellow Candy Onion seeds and started them early to make our own *sets* to transplant into the spring garden.....we have done this before with Walla Walla onions that did ok....not large bulbs on the onions more like med size....we have bought sets too and they did about the same....last year we put in Walla Walla sets into our new front yard BTE growing area and they did the best so far....

this year I was happy to find some New York onion sets for sale at our local nursery and they too are doing great in the front yard BTE area....the ones in our SFG beds are doing kind of iffy.....but there is still hope for them.....

SG, Beautiful onions. Most of mine fell over, got cabbage worms or rotted. Back to the drawing board.

OK...so I planted "sets" sounds like. Thank you! Will def plant them again. We planted Georgia Sweets last summer, and loved them! We kind of like the smaller onions, because it seems once you cut them up, they don't really store well, so these (even tho they're good sized!!) should be awesome! We sliced some for Tri Tip sandwiches the other night yummo!
Sanderson, cabbage worms on your onions , wow...that's not good? We didn't have any pests on these guys. I'm wondering why yours rotted...over watering? Are they in chips?

SG, As far as the rot, I think they were over-watered for their MM box locations. The cabbage moth hit kale, onions, cantaloupe and Purple Podded beans!

thanks guys! These were from about 12 seeds!! The plants just jumped out of the BTE soil and grew like crazy! They are SO tasty too! We ate them like snacks, and froze the rest Smile

That is what keeps us going. For me, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
Dunno what I'll do if I ever reach it.
Same with winning a lottery, it would change my life, and possibly not for the better.

We are getting our fall crops going. This has Been our best year ever. Only thing that didn't grow well was taters. Gotta get those figured out. Want to do sweet peas on our trellis
