for some reason my family has always called the berries "choke cherries" Was always told they were Poisonous

Thanks for the confirmation. The family has a Down child who likes to pick the cherry tomatoes in the same area. I will let them know.

Pokeweed is not the same as chokecherries. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prunus_virginiana
Choke cherries are edible.

Poke is very poisonous when full grown. It is only safe in the Spring when it first comes up. My DH picks the young plants, peels the stalk, cuts like okra, breads and fries. I think it was CCR that had a song, Polk Salad Annie. I don't care for it myself.

I'm a little confused . . . the plant in the photo is poisonous, correct? It's not in the prunus family, correct?

Yes Sanderson, it is very poisonous when full grown. Be sure to wear gloves when you pull it up. You will not see any deer eating that 1.
I have no idea what family it is in.

See why "common" names by family members is not a good way to keep track of plant names. But they were right, the pictured from OP is poisonous.
