thermal mass in cold frames
I heard about thermal mass in greenhouses and I decided to try it for my cold frames and have become a firm believer.
I have about 8-10 cubic feet of "air space" under my window "lights". I put a gallon of water total spread over two jugs that have dark colors. I did an experiment and found out that the lows in the cold frame were three to four degrees warmer with them than they would usually be without them. And they soak up a lot of heat, too. I forgot to lift my window on a sunny day (I don't have any automatic vents) and I checked and instead of them being over 80 degrees inside, it was 68. The plants have responded by the stable temperatures, too.
They don't take up much room.
