Time to order Seed for next Spring? Empty Time to order Seed for next Spring?

Post  mschaef 10/2/2013, 6:54 pm

I'm planning on ordering seed for next spring just not sure when to do it. Our last frost isn't until May but do seed distributors still have seeds if I wait til Feb to order. I have never got a seed catalog so I'm out of luck there.Sad  I know that there is a list of great places to orders seeds on here just not sure when to finish deciding what I want and when to place my order. Any thoughts?

I don't even crack a seed catalog until after the first of the year.

Time to order Seed for next Spring? Empty Re: Time to order Seed for next Spring?

Some seeds get sold out early. This sometimes happens with new cultivars or ones that get heavily promoted in a catalog or on a website. Sometimes the inventory was not stocked too deeply in the first place.

I don't think you'll have to worry about something like brandywine tomato seeds or kentucky wonder pole beans, but something like red brussels sprouts, dwarf basil, a particular purple carrot, elephant garlic, or a newish flower hybrid might get sold out more quickly.

If you go to a website you might want to buy from next year and see SOLD OUT on a cultivar you're interested in, especially if it was newly stocked this last year or is a bit of an oddball, you might want to order those seeds a little early, just in case.

I picked up 3 catalogs at the Heirloom Exposition, but I'm holding off until at least Dec to drool. Very Happy

The best catalog I get is from www.rareseeds.com You should just go to the websites and request catalogs!! some of my other faves are www.territorialseeds.com (but they are expensive), www.parkseeds.com, and www.gurneys.com.

Also, Christmas is coming and you know what fits into stockings quite nicely... Seeds Wink

I wouldn't order until after Christmas!
