Sounds more like damping off insect. Although this is usually a problem with sproutlings before planting out. I have never used the wall of water and wonder if the enclosed area is encouraging dampness around the stem that allows the fungus to take hold. I will defer to other users to enlighten me.

That is an interesting possibility. I would like to get a feeling for this before I transplant any more cucumbers.

Will there be any problem in planting new cucumber transplants in this space? I intend to wait for several days until the soil warms up and drys out.

It does sound like damping off. if you put some seed in you could spritz the soil top with a hydrogen peroxide and water mix afterwards. don't know how you would handle putting transplants in the same space. But I've never had luck with cucumbers, transplants in particular. And 40 is pretty darn cold for cucumbers. I like to wait till its in the mid 60's before I plant my seeds.

Cucumbers are notorious for collapsing after transplanting. They just cannot tolerate the stress well at all. I have found it best to simply wait to sow directly which results with fewer plants collapsing.

I am going to wait till June before planting seeds. Looking at my records though the only success is when I used transplants. Going with a hybrid variety this year and hoping for the best..........

I had good luck last year with a cucumber called thunder.I purchased it from Twilley's seeds in S.C.
It stated resistance to bacterial wilt, it did very nicely for me, however I think those little beetles got them anyway..

I had planted the cucumber transplants about two weeks ago, and they were doing very well. However, we had several days of very cool nights and damp weather. I think that this plus the Wall of Water covered by row cover must have created too much humidity for the seedlings. The weather is supposed to get much warmer over the next few days. I am going to plant again this weekend with both transplants and seeds to hedge my bets.

Did not see thunder as being bacterial wilt resistant but will check again. I am going to try Country Fair.
