Fall means apples.... Empty Fall means apples....

Post  bnoles 9/25/2013, 9:10 am

It is the beginning of Fall here in GA and that means fresh apples at good prices.  We went to the market yesterday and I picked up 6 lbs of apples and made some crock pot apple butter over night which I will be canning shortly.  I love this stuff spread over raisin toast. hungry hungry

Our Pink Lady and Goldrush gave us a very good crop, while Anna and Arkansas Black were pretty thin. I've been trying to keep spraying to a bare minimum, and it's not working, so I guess I'll have to spray more next year. Lots of beautiful apples that are wormy. We trim off the worm damage and use them anyway, if at all possible. We've canned a lot of applesauce (the last batch was apple-muscadine yummy) and dried as much more.

Bob, the apple butter looks fantastic.  I'm going apple picking this weekend with friends.  Planning to freeze or can apple pie filling to use later for the holidays plus make fruit roll-ups.  But I may have to make some of that luscious looking apple butter too, bet it smelled terrific.

That apple-muscadine sounds truly awesome. I am keeping my eye out for muscadines which I would like to get for some jelly.

Gina, you really must try the apple butter, it is so easy and 1000X better than store bought. It was hard sleeping last night with that crock pot smelling up the whole house.

Okay, here it is all canned up.  I was a little disappointed in the small quantity from 6# of apples.  I only got 5 half pints plus one small tub for the fridge for eating immediately.  I may have to make a 2nd batch so I have some to give away (our kids have become beggars) rofl

A friend and I did appplesauce and butter last Sat.  50 lbs of Jonagold apples yielded 35 pints of sauce.  We did crock pot apple butter started with the last jars of last year's sauce.  A not quite double batch (which starts with 12 c sauce) yielded 12 half pints of butter.

I picked a lot of apples from my neighbor's tree that hangs over my yard (with permission).  Can you use any type of apple for apple butter?  There are a lot of apples for eating and the ones that I need to cut out the worm damage I want to use for something.  Can you post your recipe for apple butter please?

Hi Tricia, you can use most any type of apple from what I understand.  I used a combo of Granny Smith and Washington State which worked well.

I'm sorry, but I no longer wish to upset the recipe police by posting them on line.  You can google crock pot apple butter and get all kinds of hits or watch videos on youtube or look in the Ball Bluebook for great examples.

I'd be the first one to step up and be very vocally annoyed with anyone acting like the recipe police around here since we have a Food and Recipes forum to freely share recipes as much as we want.  I wasn't aware of this being a problem.

I was thinking it must be a secret recipe and the inventor wants it to stay that way...? I hope that's what was meant.

I've never had apple butter, can you describe its flavor and texture. I can't imagine there is anything made of apples I wouldn't like. I need to look up a recipe and see what its all about.

We used sauce from last year made with Gala apples; this year our sauce is Jonagolds.  You might check online which apples are best for which purposes; anything good for sauce would be good for butter.  It is thicker and more highly seasoned than sauce; really yummy.  I will post my recipe when I get home.

I was just notified that my multi grafted apple tree is scheduled to be delivered on Friday. I'm so excited.....I can't stand it. Hopefully in a few years I'll be making apple butter with my own home grown apples.
