Logistical questions Empty Logistical questions

I'm ready to start composting.  Husband is finally on board, we got a bin, learned what to put in it (and what not to put in it), but I still have a few questions...
First, what happens during the winter?  I'm in 5b, we're talking about months of snow and hard frost.  Does the process completely stop?  Can I keep adding?
Then, when do i actually use the compost?  Do I have to stop adding to it for a while?  I don't have room for a second bin and I didn't think about this detail when I chose a single compartment tumbler. 
Also, does a compost accelerator actually make a difference?  Do I need that?

I'm in 5a and I make my compost pile in the fall, turn it a few times and then let it do it's thing over the winter, it is typically usable by May. Look at the threads, 'Are you a hottie' and 'Composting 101'. vermi composting is more that I want to deal with in the winter, what with all that pushing around of snow and heating wood and such.

This past winter was my first real exposure to composting.
This winter I'll have two 4 cubic foot piles working.
Yes I will turn when I can and not frozen, I'm in zone 5.
I have a tumbler for kitchen waste, didn't work for me last winter.
I'll try again this year, maybe it will work..
One pile I am going to keep adding veggie waste from produce stores,
the freeze thaw process will surely help...
