I have a large area next to my house on the east side which only receives morning sun. Does anyone have any suggestions of crops that would do well in this location? Right now it is a weed bed that drives me crazy and I would much rather convert it to garden use...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

TIA,
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,

That morning sun is such a beautiful sun. While I've never tried veggies on the east side of my house, I have been very successful with flowers. According to the book, All New Square Foot Gardening, spinach, radishes, lettuce and many herbs will do well there and may even continue through the summer as they like the cooler weather.

I hope this is helpful. Keep us posted.

Possible new bed location. Empty Raspberries and Rhubarb

Post  auntiemommy 4/28/2010, 3:09 pm

I have a patch of Raspberries and a hill of Rhubarb on the East side of my house. They have done wonderfully with only morning sun. (I planted them 10 years ago when I was first starting to garden and had no idea about the sun issue)

Most things that would usually give up in the heat might like the afternoon break. I know rhubarb would, but pretty much any cool season veggie might do better in zone 7 on the east side. It might be an area that would help you extend your season on all the cool season veggies.

And mint loves a bit of shade. Have you tried the "fancy" mints - like chocolate mint, lime mint, etc? Remember you'll need some serious containment for mint, but a separate bed might be just the thing. Beautiful, lush growth with morning sun. Just keep them divided from each other or you won't be able to tell what's what.

Lime and grapefruit mint together with a little lemon balm and/or lemon verbena is my favorite summertime tea, no "tea" needed.
