Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
We're still harvesting Swiss Chard, Kale, lettuce, raspberries (not sfg), cabbage, broccoli, parsley, and also some snap peas. I harvested my first eggplant and basil yesterday, and we're waiting for tomatoes and peppers any day now.
Looking forward to a great summer and fall season!!

Guess what we had today!
Most of you will know that we had 'fried green tomatoes' for supper. I'm so glad there is no real work (hoeing, etc) in SFG. I'm tempted to install lights in the garden, so I can pick stuff at night when it's so hot.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I was just snacking on a couple of cherry tomatoes, and I can't stop! They are so sweet! And I don't like tomatoes. Maybe these taste different to me because I grew them.
Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Today we had out of the garden, shallots, snap peas, lettuce, chard, carrots.
Jo, maybe a head lamp would work. http://bikegeekgarden.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/headlamp_gardening.jpg

I swear I didn't like tomatoes until a couple years ago, into my 30s. And last year especially, when I grew some sungold cherry tomatoes for the first time. It does make a difference! Now if only mine would ripen.

Like Rose, we have snap and sugar peas from the garden coming on gangbusters. The Opal Creek yellow podded peas are positively beautiful, but so tall we're going to have to start harvesting them from a ladder. Still getting lots of kale, both intentional and feral (a kale plant or two went to seed last year while we were away for a month, and I have them coming up everywhere--at least they taste better than dandelions). Hi Tn-Gardener,
Would you mind sharing the recipe. 1 jar at a time sounds like a good idea.
thanks, Jo

Leeks, onions, a tiny carrot, potato leftovers from a previous crop, frozen green onion tops, zucchini--all part of a scrumptious halibut recipe (just for the halibut, LOL) .

Ain't nothing special about the recipe. Got on the inter-web.
These are super sweet (almost too sweet) so next time I think I might cut back a little on the sugar.
http://www.cooks.com/rec/search/0,1-0,icebox_pickles,FF.html
2 cups white sugar
1 cup white vinegar
dash of salt (probably a couple teaspoons)
sliced cucumbers (and onions)
Warm the vinegar and dissolve the salt n sugar. Cool and pour into the jar of sliced cucumbers n onions. They say you can keep em this way for a week or so in the fridge, but I eat em too fast to test that out.

My very first little cucumber of the season is ready! YAY! My two tomatoes on the vine are still staring back, green as they can be.

I made my first butternut squash soufle this last weekend. It was fantastic!!! My tomatoes are taking a long time to ripen also, but I'm just happy I have some. This is the first year my tomatoes have actually produced. I think I'm going to like this gardening thing!!!

Cucumbers...lots and lots of cucumbers and basil. I'm just waiting for more peppers to grow and some tomatoes to ripen.

We are getting cherry tomatoes now and I picked a handful of green beans tonight. Oh and onions. I like being able to go pick an onion when I need one!

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
TA DA!!!!! My very first EVER itty bitty POTATOES! 6 of the little 'uns dislodged accidently when we made a pair of acequias on either side of the tater row. i just boiled the cuties - 4 kennebecs and 2 red norlands - and added nothing to them. ohhhhh. savored every one. though I did notice that the kennebecs were perfect in consistency but the reds were just a little too soft. flavor!
Then I fired up some store bought spuds with our fresh garlic and onions picked today! just as I got them started - sis called, frantic about what to do with a baby bird that took a long step out of its nest. So. Now my house smells like fresh - burned - garlic.
Also got some collards, which I've never had before.
Have any of you ever tried purslane? I hear it can sometimes be found in 'gourmet' supermarkets. HA! It's growing as a WEED all over our community farm! I pulled a sack full of it and gave some to friends. They LOVE IT! It's good raw in a salad (very crunchy) and can also be stir fried.
We should be getting tomatoes next week. And my peas are just now starting to brown...

Made a nice rice and sugar snap pea salad using rice leftover from last night's dinner, peas picked this afternoon, Thousand Island dressing, sharp cheddar and a bit of dried mustard powder.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Oxmyx1, what does purslane taste like? I have tried to eradicate it from my yard for years. I've used all kinds of things, from pulling it out to Round Up. It still persists. How did I not know it was edible? It's a weed here in Iowa, as far as I've ever known anyway.
