Nothing today, as it's too early for anything planted this spring to be ready (high temps today are 46 degrees). I have a few brussels sprouts in the fridge from the last harvest that I'll be preparing tomorrow, and then we're going to play the waiting game.

Kale from last spring was on my dinner plate tonight. Still have chard from last spring, winter collards, spinach and lettuce.

Survivors. Zone 8a, crazy winter, and hoops houses made the perfect storm THIS year. Lettuce seed, collards, and spinach starts were planted 1 week in Nov.

I guess I have tomatoes from my garden every night..... but they were in the freezer, or jars.... Smile
I was amazed when the snow melted and I checked my compost pile, which was frozen, and there is a large leaf of Kale perfectly preserved over the winter.
Spinach is still alive under the snow, it really is amazing. It will be interesting to see what a few days of sun does.
I planted them in the fall.
Mother Nature certainly is..... unpredictable...if she is anything.

What are you eating from your garden today? - Page 12 Empty Sun-chokes and Potatoes

Post  Dadoo 3/17/2012, 1:23 am

My son Vinnie and I harvested the remaining five pounds of yellow potatoes from our potato silos. We are still harvesting sun-chokes from last years crop out of the raised bed behind the garage. A friend of mine mentioned that the can become invasive and from what I have harvested during the past six months, she is correct.
We are having a spectacular patch of great summer weather in Rolling Meadow. It has been in the eighties all week.
Unfortunately it's March and I am still cautious since the temperatures are usually in the forties.

As I begin to plant, I am keeping the garden blankets at hand. (Just in case).

Post  Lavender Debs 3/17/2012, 8:02 am

I'm thinking we need a 2012 edition of this thread

March 16, 2012: Leek and Rice soup..... 4 cups sliced leeks from my winter garden (PNW) + multiple sprigs of thyme, oregano, parsley and sage in the broth. The first of the chives snipped and sprinkled on top of the soup.

If I had done a better job planning I could have used carrots and potatoes from the garden but they are long gone.

@GWN: I am not in charge of the rules, but if I was, I would say that if it was canned or frozen and came from your garden than it still counts as from your garden....even with the side trip to the freezer! Kudos girl!

@Kay: WooT! I love that your spinach survived but even more, I love hearing about success with collards. I have the WORST time getting those apparently simple greens to grow. They are now on my Halloween list (the list started with garlic, I live close to Forks, and started growing)

@ Dadoo: What are you doing with the chokes? I keep thinking I'll find a place to start them but don't get past the thinking about it stage. Today is actually March 17, I'll be doing potatoes today if my cut-edges have healed sufficiently. (welcome to you and Vinnie)

Lavender Debs, can you get broccoli, cabbage and kale to grow. If so, you should be able to get collards to grow. What variety did you try. My favorite is Vates non heading which I do as cut and come again.

Funny thing, collards are listed as a cool weather crop, but here in HOT NC we grow them all summer. First crop is set out just shortly before the last frost and allowed to grow all summer. These are not as tasty as the fall/winter collards but sure beat having no greens at all. Usually have to put hot pepper vinegar on these. The fall/winter crop can be direct seeded in late Aug, but I prefer to either start seeds in pots or buy starts in late Sep. Let them grow until a hard freeze turns them to mush. The best taste is after a light frost or two. Chances are your summer collards are still producing until the first frost. I have had some summer collards go all winter as thick stalks and then leaf out and bolt the following spring. Cabbage worms are the evil nemesis.

Kay

Post  moswell 3/17/2012, 8:40 pm

I was hanging out in the yard today reading, when I noticed that the pot of scallions I'd planted a couple years ago had some new, fresh scallions in it. I couldn't stand it - I picked some and made a nice Thai chicken stir-fry tonight.

The scallions were planted about two years ago (pre-SFG for me - just in a pot of regular old potting soil). I got lazy that year I planted them in the pot and never removed all of them or moved the pot to my shed for the winter. Last year in the spring, I noticed they came back up, so this past fall I left them out again.

I know we've had this argument discussion here before about what scallions actually are! Very Happy In my case, I mean green onions that never really bulb and are (apparently) perennial.

We had French Fingerling potatoes with dill, both of which came from the 2011 garden. I'm going to be trimming leek and onion starts today, as well as checking on some overwintered garlic that is growing in absolutely the WRONG place (think middle of a walkway) and if it's useable I'll be digging that up to use.
You might be asking just HOW garlic found its way into the middle of a walkway. Wellllllll..... a couple of years ago, we rebuilt the raised beds and reconfigured the layout. I pulled garlic and dug up some that was still encased in soil. The ones that were still in soil got placed "out of the way", but not into another bed. Now that the garden has grown, the "out of the way" place is now IN the way!

had stir fry tonight with frozen green beans
Sad Sad
Last year I made dilly beans with most of my green beans, only froze a few bags.
I guess because my only experience with frozen green beans were the horrible ones my mom used to buy from the store.
Next year I am going to freeze MUCH more in the green bean dept, and less in the dilly beans
WE just do not eat as many pickles as I pickled.

I had French tarragon in my scrambled eggs this morning: had forgotten to mulch it (and its in a dinky little pot), so I'm rather happy that it popped back up. Unfortunately, that's the only thing that's edible at this point... what with just putting in the boxes for the first time this afternoon.

I'm so excited to not have a dozen 3-5 gal pots scattered across my balcony for a change!

Sunday ... Thyme from the garden on roast chicken with roast spuds & parsnip , kale out the garden served with a knife and fork gravy.

Today nothing out the garden

Tomorrow purple sprouting broccoli from the garden with black peppered mashed swede, grilled Lincolnshire sausages & potatoes .

Wednesday will most likely be the cold chicken , a bit of parsley & various chopped up salad veg in wraps .

Thursday the last of the dwarf curly kale with some frozen mint leaves last years out the garden on potatoes and liver & onions
