Pepper problem

I've never seen this before. I have 6 pepper plants (2' high) in a 4x4 square.
All plants were doing well except one morning I noticed that 1 plant had all it's stems chewed off.
I see no stems or leaves laying around.
I have 2' high wire panels protecting the beds so no animals could get to them (ok maybe Squirrels)

What eats pepper plants that would cause this?

Hornworm would be my guess until I see a photo. Can you post a photo?

My Peppers seem to be cooking on the plant. Several nicely formed almost ready peppers are mush when I reach down to pick. No bugs and no worm holes, just mush. And yes, it has been very hot and humid here.
