This is the second year my summer garden has been almost destroyed by days of rain. Everything is beaten down and mildewy. The only thing I have looking good is a very few okra plants. All the compost is totally soaked. I think next year I will just plan on leaving the beds empty from June to August.

Call June-July-August the "resting time" for your beds, like some call the snowy winter time their "resting time." Very Happy

My uncle who lives in Eustice, Fl does not garden in the summer since it is too hot.
It is best to wait until the fall.

The only thing growing well in this heat and rain are my green beans. I am getting ready to begin planting seeds for my "winter garden". Tomatoes, peas, lettuce, etc do best during the tourist season down here I am finding out. I mulched my beds several weeks ago and they are busy making beautiful compost for me. I also started a worm bin, so hopefully I will have a lot of nutrition for my plants by the time they get started.

I'm in a different part of the country (central OH) but can sympathize about rain! We are getting soaked on a daily basis; including 3.2 inches in the last 24 hours with more to come.

Herblover, today channel 4's weatherman, Jym Ganahl, said for the month of July (and today's only July 9th) our general area of Ohio has received between 5 to 10 inches of rain. We are expecting rain tomorrow making it 20 days in a row...

I calculated from my garden journal that I got 8.5 inches in June and so far 4.8 in July with most of that since Monday. My peppers are happy but my toms and squash are not.

Nasty storms blew through today, that means 20 days of rain in a row. Rickenbacker airport just west of me clocked 72 mph winds this afternoon. I braced a few plants from the expected westerly wind using wooden shims to stake basil and a couple zucchini that was hanging over the beds. It worked. I think those plants could have snapped stems without a little assistance.

So glad I spent a great deal of time suckering and pruning earlier this week. Got rid of all that extra weight before todays storm hit. So, 17 plants later I'll bet there was close to 10 pounds of unnecessary foliage no longer wasting nutrient absorption too.

Herblover and R&R -- wind damage in your area?

No garden damage but some to one of our trees; arborist coming out at the end of the week to assess it.

Herblover, hope all goes well with tree damage assessment. We were worried about our trees but most are less than 10 yrs or so in age so they still bent with the wind. Oh boy they sure bent a lot though.

Ours is too (planted May 2004); it had made it through Hurricane Ike and last year's derecho, but not those winds.
