Kniphofia aka red hot poker . I never thought of them a being a harbinger of high summer.
I've tried several times in the past 35 years to grow them from seed without success past them germinating , getting to about 2 inches tall then dying.
Anyone got any tips ?

Dig some up from an unsuspecting neighbor's yard in the middle of a dark, moonless night...

Bought one last year that had one large orange "poker". Thought it was cool, but after the flower died,just looked like a pot of decorative grass. Wintered outside and I trimmed back all the dead outside blades, not expecting much. All of a sudden one poker pops up, then 2 >>> now 9! very cool plant. Will post picture when I get a chance

Plantoid, based on experience here in rainy Western Oregon, red hot pokers don't do as well as they did either in Texas or in northern Washington where Vancouver Island, British Columbia, creates a diversion of incoming rain, or "rain shadow" creating much drier weather. Hence, it seems
red hot pokers need a drier climate to do their best. Isn't your weather a bit wetter like we have in Western Oregon? Perhaps that's the problem. Nonna
