Lemongrass and Mint

This spring I've constructed 1 4x4 box and 1 4x2 box to plant a few herbs and vegetables. Today I constructed the pipe trellis on the north side of the 4x4 box and planted some tomatoes, now that the late spring snow seems over for Colorado.

I also picked up some mint, and have been rooting some lemongrass stalks in a glass of water on the window sill. Has anyone tried mint or lemongrass in a square foot garden?

Based on how they can spread, I'm leaning towards planting in a standalone container, with the possibility of bringing them inside during the winter...

I had heard that mint spreads, so I put it by itself in a 2x2 box last year. The plant grew well all summer. I left it outside all winter, but my winter temps are milder than yours. The plant is looking good this year, but I don't see any signs of it spreading yet. That's all I know about mint!

Speaking from zone 4. For years I had spearmint growing in a 6" band on the east side of the house where it was very protected. If it grew past that it would freeze back in the winter. Now my climate is warmer and the mint has spread into the lawn a couple feet away. A few years ago I had planted some ginger mint in a corner of a raised bed thinking it would get froze in the winter and not be a problem. Well I am pulling it to try to get it out now.

I've been wanting to grow some lemon grass for skeeter control but can't seem to find any around here. I know it grows tall and works well as a small privacy fence but not sure about how aggressive it is.

As for the mint...you'll definitely want to contain it! I started w/ a tiny plant in a very neglected pot 3yrs ago. It completely took over the pot (and then some) and has survived 3wks of scorching heat and no water and left out all winter. I keep cutting it back, and it's unfazed. On a plus side, I placed that pot in-between plants throughout the garden as a deterrent and it appears that no little stray mint plants are growing...so that's good. Smile

Been wanting to try lemongrass too, and so far I haven't been able to find any either Sad

I usually find lemongrass in the produce department at the grocery store. It is pretty easy to root.

I had mint that was very aggressive. It wasnt planted in Mels Mix$$. I would cut it down with the lawn mower. Chives also self seeded everywhere too.

I checked the lemon grass this afternoon ....... " It's daid dad ".

Our lemon grass rooted well in a glass of rain water in the kitchen , but did not do too well in MM in the cool glasshouse where temps struggled to get over 50 of in early April , it died slowly , watering so the MM was quite moist it seemed to speed up it's demise.

New lemon grass sticks will be purchased from the supermarket on Wednesday if it is on their shelves .
It certainly seems to like the warmer temps without much water.

Can any of you growers give a first hand rundown of the cultivation please?

Lemongrass will sometimes survive a zone 8 winter. I bring mine inside for the winter. Mint is very invasive. Grow it in a pot.
