Too much grapefruit in the compost? Empty Too much grapefruit in the compost?

Post  Larraine Winkler 5/3/2013, 10:09 am

I am new to SFG, have my boxes all set and hope to put the Mel's Mix in this weekend (right now it is snowing and 32 deg -- AGAIN!! Shocked ). I bought a compost tumbler and have started putting in 2 parts brown, 1 part green. My question is about grapefruit. We eat a lot of grapefruit. Is it possible to have too much of this acidic rind in the compost?

Me, too. I eat one or two citrus fruits a day, and also get the rinds from all the folks at work every day. They just disappear in the compost.

We go through a lot of oranges here and compost much of it. What we don't compost we add to a gallon of vinegar to "marinate" and use for cleaning. I also want to see if I can make my own orange oil spray for insect repellant this year. There are so many other great uses for your citrus peels...you can never have too many! IMHO.
