Any reason not to do this....

Could I grow my vining plants (cucumbers, squash etc) up through cages, then wind it around the outside of the cage to help contain it? If it gets crazy, ould I cut it back to keep it under control? I would think that this might even help dirent the plan't energy to setting fruit.

Thoughts? Anyone done this? Pics? Vine haircuts? Icon_smile

So the only option is to trellis? How about cages?

Lacysue,

I have a question for you (or anyone else who may know). It is concerning fruiting bushes....
I planted 3 blueberry bushes (Northblue, Northcountry) and read that during the first year I should pick all the flowers and not allow fruiting!!! Now, I applolgize if this question sounds silly, but is that considered "pruning"? Do you believe (and why?) that this theory is false also?
I have these bushes in large containers, so I was able to manipulate the soil into ideal condition for them. (my theory, or HOPE, is that they will produce better in containers due to this fact)

Also, I have read the same about strawberries....to pick the flowers until around July........???

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Tonya

I believe they say that about blueberries and strawberries b/c they are perennial plants. Not letting them go to fruit helps the plants get established so they will produce better in years to come. Most vegetables are annual, so they don't need a whole year to get established. I had heard that keeping tomatoes to a single vine and not allowing the suckers can be beneficial. I think though that zucchini and cucumbers come from multiple vines, and not one main one, so maybe that is why pruning doesn't help them.
