A few warm days and plants want to take off..but I don't understand why the strawberry runners from last year look so different next to each other, anyone know??

This is a six inch purple passion, the tape measure is bent making it look even larger. It was hard to take a pic and hold the tape measure.

Mostly garlic, left foreground is overwintered chamomile, background is crazy happy egyptian onions towering over things.

Yes, I'm new with egyptian onions and impressed with how happy they seem in Mels' Mix that settled to about 4 inches deep. Literally.. see what's up.. 5-1-1313

Bear with me.. do Egyptian onions form scapes?

This is the last one, of potatoes that recovered after turning black and crispy from cold nights. I broke them off and they came back again. Thanks again Camprn, you said they'd come back!

WOW! You got things looking really nice up there LM. The onions will form scapes with tiny onion bulbs that will drop off and reproduce, thus the name walking onions. Leave the scapes on if you want them to multiply and if you end up with too many extra baby bulbs, I want to be first in line Very Happy

And ooooh.... that purple asparagus looks very appetizing. rock on

The Egyptian Walking Onion Sends out a stalk and then baby onions (topsets) grow at the top. The reason they are called walking onions is that when these clumps of baby onions get larger, the stalk beds over, and the small onions are then deposited onto the ground.

Why thank you so much Bob and Camprn! Appreciate the nice and helpful thoughts. Sure Bob, you are first in line. I believe I got these E. Onions from Littlejo last year so thanks to her too! If I get lots of bulbills I'll take requests from others too.

This particular box is suppose to be dedicated later on to all corn, Organic Golden Bantum Improved, from Seed Savers, so the onions will have to be harvested, moved, or given away sometime in June or early July to make way for the corn. I pray the garlic will have been harvested by then too.

Looking great, LM! Ive never heard of the egyptian onion. It looks huge. Did your strawberries have any green on them when you bought the roots?

The egyptian onions are all of 2 ft. tall. The garlic nearby was about 16 inches.
The bare rooted strawberries barely had any green on them as I recall. The ones in the pictures above were runners that were cut during last summer from the original bare roots planted last spring. I found bare roots planted at the correct depth are marvelous little things. Tough as nails.

LM could the strawb plants difference be due to incompatabilities ..... of being adjacent to the leeks ???

Hmm, I don't know maybe it is an incompatability thing? Next to them is garlic, though leeks was a good thought too. I had quinalt strawberries which look similar to the strawberries on the left, but they didn't throw out runners. And I swear I didn't pull any Quinalts from the other box. I'm almost wondering if it is a weird weed that looks like a strawberry plant?

Oh man, I hope it's not that crazy wild strawberry. They are so invasive at my house. The berries are pea size but full of flavor.

Don't think so. I checked my garden notes and these were definitely runners transplanted from another bed.
