Re: Hello from my new urban garden...
I will check, but I don't think so.
I think perlite is an acceptable substitute for the vermiculite but I still wasn't able to get enough of it to make it 1/3 the mix in my boxes. I will keep my eyes peeled in my travels for vermiculite, perlite and other compost mixes. Hopefully for the next 12 boxes I build I will be able to do a better mix.
Don't have to fill those for a bit (I still have to build those) So I might have a week or so before those get filled.
Today, I'm planning to plant another 6 boxes.... Then I'll have 12 built, filled and planted. This is feeling alot like work, haha but I'm enjoying seeing the results so far...

John Kohler at growingyourgreens.com has a video on where you can get things like rock dust and worm castings, delivered to your house. I imagine some of those places might also deliver vermiculite and perlite. Here is a link...

You can always search amazon or ebay as well. A lot of times when you order from amazon you can GREAT deals, and if your order is over $25-30 you can get free shipping. I can't hurt. And you know, I WISH I had thought of that when I needed it! D'OH!

Thats kinda funny, can you imagine free shipping on an order of 6 50lb bags of vermiculite or compost?

Home Depot has free shipping with a $40 minimum order on vermiculite. Earlier this year I also got Ecoscraps compost from them with free shipping(neither were in stock at my local HD) although the last I looked the Ecoscraps was no longer available w/free shipping.

Re: Hello from my new urban garden...
Yes I was just told today I could get free ship to store. Thats pretty cool but I still have to face the expense of paying for enough vermiculite to fill 12 (2ft by 4ft by 6 inches deep boxes) The compost and peat moss not such a worry...
If my math is right thats 1.32 cubic feet per box, X12 boxes = 16 cubic feet of vermiculite needed... at 2cubic feet per bag that means 8 bags... 160$ just for the vermiculite... UGH.
Not sure how many cubic feet come in those big peat moss bags, which is more like a box at 10$ each... Then compost.
Might be cheaper just ordering mels mix in bulk from home depot...
