We live in Idaho Falls, ID - zone 4 - we've lived here for close to 20 years and gardening has not been easy for us here. Several years ago after yet another disappointing growing season, we pretty much gave up gardening; however, we have over 100 rose bushes and have done some container gardening. I caught the gardening bug way after my husband, who gave up way before me. We're originally from ND and had awesome gardens there, the hardest thing for me here has been the inability to harvest many ripe tomatoes (except in containers that are on the patio). Someone referred me to the Square Foot Gardening book; I'm in the planning stages - however, frustrated, because I can't get my husband to "buy" into this. Trying to figure out what location would get enough sunlight in my yard that I can put a few boxes in; after that, I will try and do this thing on my own, I guess - wish me luck!

Hi there, Friecs

I think you've got the right idea......first off, the fact that you're not giving up is awesome!
If you have to do this on your own for a while, then go for it. Start small; this is a very manageable project. I did everything myself....cutting the sod, building the boxes, mixing everything...no problem!!

It's something that will pay-off for you once he sees the big, ripe tomatoes growing for you! then you'll have your gardening partner back (not to mention adding a few more boxes every yr).
Good luck
