Bought some leeks

Bought a set of leeks at the garden center. I have never planted leeks ( or onions) so I went to the search site and found a thread on leeks. It said to dig a big hole and put the plants in and let the plant grow to fill the hole. It seems to me that when you water the plants the hole will fill in anyway. Any ideas will help.
