Indoor seedling picture

Until now I haven't posted any pictures, and so I figure it is about time with the various helpful answers I've already gained from this forum. You can ignore the stuff in the background behind the photos. The stand is in my model railroad room that hasn't been fully reassembled since moving, so stuff is a bit piled up and my circuit control board just cluttering up the background here and there.

Here is my growstand. Top level are peas planted yesterday in 4" pots covered with seran wrap. Second level are chives and onions seen in the second photo plus seran wrap covered peas, tomatos, and peppers planted yesterday. Bottom level are the celery,herbs, and lettuce shown in the third and fouth photos plus more lettuce flats planted today with seran wrap over those.

Back row: Garlic chives (1), green onions (2), onions (2)
The two middle front flats (7 cells) are the green onions I accidently dumped on the floor yeserday. So far they seem to be surviving.

Nice set up, Ed. And those onions look just fine. I can't believe how strong onions are. I planted some out yesterday, shoved those I didn't have room for back into the tray, covered them with soil and today they look like I never took them out of the tray. Amazing.

Looking great! I drop at least one tray of something every year Last year it was tomatoes This year it was a mix with arugula mostly!

I like your vertical shelf and setup. Great that your onions are doing so well. I am going to try to grow onions from seed this year for the fall, because the onion "sets" that I can get in the nurseries are only available in the springtime, which is not a good time to grow them in my space. I take up the space with tomatoes, peppers, cukes, etc...the warm weather stuff.

Do you have any trouble popping out the seedlings from that style of grow packs? I use 3 inch peat pots that I got for 10 cents each, but find that roots do NOT grow through them easily. So, I will be switching to newspaper pots or soil bricks soon. Hate to waste the peat pots when I just tear them off before "potting up" the seedlings.

Really easy and quick to build. The top level I was out of steel pins to align the legs so I just screwed 2 scrap wood pieces sticking up 1" from outside of each post of the middle shelf to cradle the top section legs securely (I only screwed into the legs below so the top is still removable.) Just didn't want to drive back to Lowes to get 4 steel pins.

It's my first year so I will see later whether popping the seedlings out of that style tray goes well or not. I haven't had to pot up yet.

Off-topic: CindiLou - It is HO scale. Plan is eventually for it to meander all over two floors of the house using elevator sections to connect. But that is years away.

Hey Guys, this is my first year starting onions. I grew them in a lettuce clam pack filled with old used MM from one of my SFG boxes. They grew great! That's them on the bottom shelf of this rack, the only seedlings not in cells:

When it was time to plant them I gave them a haircut, then dug out a trowel full of them, set that into this tub and they pretty much fell apart because the MM is so friable and easy to work with.

Then I gathered them together, cut their roots down to 2 inches or so and planted them. So easy.

Is it just onions that can stand becoming completely unexposed to mix during the transplanting process? Or is that the case for other plants too? Looks like for onions it will be straightforward, but I'm wondering if I have to carefully scoop mix and all for other veggies when I move to larger pots or when I move them to the garden.

Gosh, I don't really know. But I know that when I transplanted any of my veggies to the garden over the past couple of weeks, or to new pots, sometimes the MM would fall off the roots and sometimes it stayed on if it was wet and so I left it on. All the seedlings grew great after transplanting. So in my case it didn't matter either way. But maybe someone in the know can give you an official answer.
