Green Onions
I went to a seed swap last Summer, and this guy gave me 3 or 4 small green onion bulbs. He called them wild onion, and said to just stick them in the ground and they would grow.
I put them in one of my SFG beds in September of last year, and they have been growing like crazy. We've been eating a few here and there.
I'm posting pics below. My question is, is there a way to preserve them? I have so many that are just staying in the ground. Every time we eat some of them, I cut the roots off, put them back in the ground, and away they go...perpetual onions! I read that if you dehydrate them, it's just like cutting onions and will burn your eyes. I have a really nice Excalibur dehydrator that I use for everything else. Any ideas ?
Also, those little blooming ends, should I be cutting those off ?

Wow, so that's what wild onions will do in MM, ey? Mine don't get that big, but they are planted in the earth under a forsythia bush back in the corner of my yard. I may have to just transplant some to the SFG.
You could chop them up, lay them out on an sheet pan and freeze them. Put them in a baggie once frozen. Personally, I skip the sheet pan part and just bag em and freeze em.

Re: Green Onions
Can you put the dehydrator outside while it's working?

Now why didn't I think of that? What a great idea. Looks like we'll have dehydrated onions after all !
I haven't saved any of the seed from the blooms. I really haven't had a problem with bunnies.

Re: Green Onions
I dehydrate quite a few onions in the winter. I put the dehydrator out in the greenhouse, because the odor will drive you out of the house.

I will try freezing them too. Yeah they love the MM. I had to dig really deep to get them out of the bed....and the dirt smelled so good and "oniony"...

Re: Green Onions
I don't pull my wild onions out...I just cut them at ground level and they always come back. Same with chives.

I harvested some that way too. I just felt like digging down today, and seeing what came up. I'm cutting the tip and replanting.
