Hi. I live in northwest Florida, have a yard that's available would love to grow veggies. I have no idea how so somehow directed me here. I think it's too early to start but I know some Texans are getting produce from their gardens now. Sound right?

Welcome to the forum. I'm in Maine, but I believe those that live in Florida are already growing crops. They need to get them grown and harvested before it gets too hot in July and August when things slow to a crawl.

Thanks. I'm in north Florida though. It gets cold here. 40s at least. I threw some ice out the other evening and next morning it was still there. Not all of it but some.

I am north of you and I have already planted taters. I have got 3 beds ready to plant just as soon as this cold snap passes. here is a pic of my taters before covering them up. [ the space to the right and back is also taters from a store that has sprouted]

Just reporting here that I have two square-foot gardens sides up and sitting next to them is peat moss and two kinds of compost. I went to the extension office and was told that late March is the time to plant tomatoes, cucumbers, peas. Hope I can be ready!

I'm especially proud of myself for getting those heavy bags from the car to the backyard with help!!! I bought a $35 plastic wheelbarrow thingie and managed to load them onto that and dump them out.

On someone else's thread, I read that it's a good idea to work with three tarps: one for mixing compost, one for vermiculite and one to put it all together and deliver into the gardens via bucket. That's the plan. I don't have another day off work until Thursday but hopefully I can get at least one done then. Yay !!!!

BTW, I had trouble seeing myself drilling holes, etc. to build a garden but Lowe's sells them in kits. Worked for me. 4x4 and 9 inches tall.

I also ordered a composter and am collecting kitchen waste like crazy. I'm pretty much a vegan and a raw one at that (not entirely), so there's always something to compost. Will be so happy when it gets here.

Betty Ann just use your wheel barrow. Get you a bucket that is manageable by you. Put one bucket of each ingredient in the wheel barrow thoroughly mix it up then dump it in the bed.
You will have to mix your compost up first, then set it aside. Your peat moss is compressed, you will need to fluff it up( uncompressed) it before hand and set it aside. The vermiculite can be scooped right from the bag. Then mix up each of the 3 components then dump.
The 5 composts will take the most space. Use a couple of trash cans. The peat in another trash can, it is easy to fluff more when the one can runs out.

If you do have a tarp you could us it but from your comments smaller would be better.

Oh yea, the compost does not take more space. But all of it needs to
be mixed before hand.
