Weed Barrier - standard dry sheathing
Hi Everyone,
I'm thinking I would like to try a different weed barrier in some of my new SFG's this year. I seen this standard dry sheathing material at home depot the other day and thought it might work well.
I'm going to be doing quite a few more boxes this year and thought this might be a more economical way to go. Any suggestions? How many layers should I put down? Am I better off just sticking with landscaping fabric?
Any suggestions appreciated.

What is this standard dry sheathing made of? Does it breathe, drain water? I'd say go ahead and try it in a couple of beds then compare the resuslts with your landscape fabric. Then, of course, report back to us if you remember to.
Has anyone else used this sheathing?

Re: Weed Barrier - standard dry sheathing
Standard Dry Sheathing is like paper, only thicker, and it's 100% recyclable. Comes in 3 x 145 ft rolls for about $15 at home depot.
Here is the link: homedepot.ca/product/standard-dry-sheathing/917430
So I thought I would use a strip down each side, each overlapping by about 1ft and then put a strip going down the middle, then a strip on each side again.
I think this would offer some pretty good protection and still be reasonably priced compared to commercial weed fabrics. What does everyone else think?

Re: Weed Barrier - standard dry sheathing
I have tried a few different paper type products in the community gardens we plant - for the same reason - it seems economical - then a year later or even later that season - the weeds are growing up into the boxes - crab grasses and such - then we end up having to pull up the soil - replace the weed mat - and start over - so in the long run the time and double effort was not worth the initial savings. I went and looked at the product link and I am also worried about the drainage - will it cause water to puddle inside where you cant see it and then you have yellow sickly plants that refuse to thrive. I would definitely say stay with the landscape fabric or any material you can find that breathes and drains and lasts without breaking down.
