Hello. I'm in zone 4 and got my love of gardening from my dad who grew up in the depression in the south and if you didn't garden, you didn't eat well. My passion is tomatoes which I struggle with here in zone 4 with a somewhat short growing season. I'm quite a seed saver and trader, love knowing that something I nurtured and grew is growing all over the United States and even in Canada. I don't do much with flowers, just a few here and there for the grandkids and to keep the neighbors happy, but as a general rule, if I can't eat it, I'm not going to waste garden space on it. I bought the lot and a half next to me just to garden so have lots of room to fill. I trade on the gardenweb, have been a member for 9 years or so, and have been able to grow a massive garden with little money spent on seeds, thanks to the generous members of the gardenweb. But I hear about other folks using other sites, thought I would browse a bit, hope to do some more trading here, and the "square foot" thing I find facinating, plan to purchase the book. Glad to meet you all!

Howdy from the low, low desert. Yep I found this site to be up on info and all kinds of help. I am a first timer for a regular type garden. My soil is mostly wet clay and has a ph of 8.5 so when I discovered SFG it was a life and labor saving gift. I was dreading trying to make my ground fertile with only me and the armstrong method of amending it. But with making an SFG I don't have that chore ahead of me although I would like to do some food trees further down the road, but for now I'm happy with what I have so far. I know there will be more to come, but all things in there time. Have fun and I'll check out the site you mentioned. Thanks
