hey yall from Texas
I heard about SFG awhile back and I wanted to learn more. I want to feed myself healthier since I dont usually eat vegetables or fruits unless its potato, onion, beans, or in my cheeseburger. Food prices are also going up and I want to eat food I grow myself compared to the store bought goods that have a bunch of unhealthy chemicals in it.

Welcome to the site James.
Do you have a copy of the book mentioned in my strapline / we tend to work with that for it's easier than trying to re invent the wheel and have to keep typing the same stuff every day ?
This is nothing at all like gardening in mother earth's soil , it works well all round the world .
Have you decided where you are going to set up and what sort of sized beds your looking at?
If you have a camera and know how to put picture on the threads please do so for as the old saying goes a picture is worth a thousand words.
I'll catch you around for It's 23.59 hrs & my Zzzzzzzz time here in the UK .

Welcome James!
Being in Texas, are you able to garden pretty much year round? As mentioned by others, the All New Square Foot Gardening book is important to read because it is the basis of this forum. Some people check out the book from the library until they can get their own, some get it way before they ever get started and some jump in with both feet and read and learn as quickly as they can, lol!
The newest version of this book in coming out in February. It is the Second Edition. The reason I mentioned this is you could check out the All New Square Foot Gardening book out of the library and either pre-order or wait to buy the book. That way you could get started now learning about composting or other things.
You can also do some reading from different topics. So say you want to learn about making compost, you can go to the column on the left, go to the bottom and type in compost. Good luck and remember if you don't understand something you read or have a question, there are great people here that will help! There are quite a number of people from Texas here on this forum!

Go for it, James!! While you're waiting on the book (which can be purchased online or found in the local library,) check out the extensive information provided on Mel's blog and SFGF's educational site: http://www.squarefootgardening.org Great to have you aboard
Re: hey yall from Texas
So glad to have you with us! I was in your shoes not too long ago and this place has been so helpful (and addictive!). The book is definitely the best place to start and, since it has sooo much useful info, it's good to just own it if you can. I pull mine out several times a year....especially around seed planting time.
And, if I may, a word of caution- plan what you will eat and have room for in your garden, write it down, and THEN go get your seeds. I started out with way too many experimental plants my first year and got in way over my head. Now I just focus on making sure the foods we eat often produce well and maybe try 1-2 new things if we have the room to do so.
