I just joined the forums but I've been S.F. for several years using the old method. It wasn't until recently that I discovered the New S.F. Gardening on the High Plains was easy. The soil was great and plenty of sunshine for summer crops. I lived in a small town of about 3,000. Three years ago my neighbor and I build a small greenhouse (8x7) so that we could start our plants early. When I moved I couldn't take it with me.

I'm so glad to have found the New S.F. because I was not looking forward to the chore of amending the tough clay soil which is predominate here. My grandkids live nearby and they are anxious to start gardening. S.F. was made for kids. I've ordered them seed catalogs and when those arrive, probably after the first of the year, I'll let them pick out what they want to grow.

I have not built boxes yet but there is plenty of time to do that. I have started a compost pile which should be ready by spring. This should be fun. Smile

We have clay soil so I know what you mean about amending it! It's nice to just make the boxes and fill them and not have to worry about the paths between. Those can stay with the clay. Welcome gardencat!

welcome to kansas city...I am done amending the clay soil (there's only so much we can do) and have done the SFG raised beds with Mels Mix. In some areas I have lawn between the boxes and some areas native clay. The clay is like concrete when we get no rain, and turns into a slippery, slimy mess when it gets wet. Even weeds have a problem growing in it s oI don't mind it too much.

I do my SFG garden in the front yard (right by the street) and get many people stopping by to look in the spring and summer. Post pics when you get your gardens up and growing next spring.
