Ive been working non-stop on fencing our yard. Our neighbor is nuts, so working on the permit for bees. Ive got them pushed back a week, so picking up the hive on the 19th & getting the bees the 26th. The zoning board meeting is first week in May, so will just hide the hives until after the meeting.

Re: Keeping bees
Camp, thanks for the cute photo.
I saw a photo last night of a man that encouraged 100 lbs. of bees to cover him and he received 20 stings. I thought, dang, that's such a low, low number of stings for 24,000 or 48,000 bees! I'll see if I can find the article and post.

I have my last hands on bee class tomorrow where he's going to show us how to put in a package of bees. Ill also be picking up my hive. I turned permit paper work in this week, board meeting is May 6th. I better get approved, the fee was outrageous.

Just seen the lovely picture of the Munchkin in a skirt with the hive on a cart
I offer a timely a warning about kiddies & bees , having seen a large yellow Labrador gun dog being stung to death.
Remember bees will home in on the released pheromones that come from a single sting and will try to attack in droves , making for one very very sick child who's life may be in danger from so many stings at one time .
Bees nearly always walk upwards from the ground .
Fit the kiddies out in clothing that allows the bees to walk up unrestricted or else the bees tend to gather on the underside of overhangs and sting through when the material is compressed as in bending forward or when sleeves are pressed against them .

Okay, Camp, you know someone is going to ask this. . . What is the pink towel doing in the frame??
And, is the fence electric?

Re: Keeping bees
The pink towel was being used as a drape to keep the bees in a bit of darkness to keep them calm. I just lifted it to take the photo.sanderson wrote:Okay, Camp, you know someone is going to ask this. . . What is the pink towel doing in the frame??

My last class, picked up my equipment. Watched how to install a hive and a very healthy over wintered hive. Pretty cool. I may be getting my bees Sat. Anyway, here's me and my friend who I took the class with.

I lost 100% this winter. If spring had come 3 weeks ago as it should have my losses would have only been about 66%.

Do you recall me saying a couple of years ago that on Christmas day over here in the UK we can usually see the queen has been laying , if we open the hive?
Well we also slip in a couple of patties of soft home made fondant icing to help them keep going . if you make the fondant patty thin enough you can if needed slip one over both sides of a frame almost right on the bee cluster as it saves them moving too far from the cluster & getting too cold .
I suggest you don't buy commercial catering fondant as most of it has a preservative & palm oil in it which is not good for the bees.
