good or bad?
I found these in my compost. I have no idea what they are eating on. It is hard, and red, and they love it. There were at least 20 of them huddled all over it.
You can see some tiny white larvae too.
Good? Bad? How to prevent?
They are so gross when they are this big!

Okay, aside from being really ugly, do you know what kind? I kinda thought the large ones might be fly maggots. They are huge, over an inch long.
HAHA...the good, the bad, the UGLY!!!

Ok those are kinda gross, especially their size. I don't have anything more to add, sorry! I would want to know if they are good or bad also and cheer them on if they are good.

Re: good or bad?
I did a search and to me it looks like a black soldier fly larvae that is great for reducing manure accumulation. But then again they look like the Crane Fly Larvae. Look at the 11th photo on the following site for the Black Fly Larvae:
http://www.google.com/search?q=larvae+identification&hl=en&rlz=1T4SKPT_enUS422US422&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=kxgWUN6GKcGJ6AH454CgBg&ved=0CFsQsAQ&biw=1058&bih=459
Another site to look at about the Black Soldier Fly: http://blacksoldierflyblog.com/bsf-questions-and-answers/
You may want to rinse one off to get a better look at it, see if it has legs, what kind of head it has, etc. That's what I read somewhere in there. I had to quit looking at these because it was getting too creepy for me. Hopefully you are better at this than I am. Good luck!
