Oleanders...

What's the best way to get rid of the Oleander plants? Especially once it's established. I've been suggested to drill a whole and pour bleach down the hole and let the bleach and sun kill it.

Anyone even like this poisonous plant?

I love Oleander! It is drought tolerant and deer resistant, but it does get HUGE. Definitely not something you want taking up valuable garden space, but it is great to have around the edges of your property. It is a great privacy hedge.

I'm not worried about privacy hedges. and We don't get deer on our street. Not that close to the mountain ranges. Plus, there's other drought resistant plants I can use in place of the oleander that's also safer for children and pets.

I've also been told by the fiance that salt, bleach, and store bought chemical killers (designed for them) don't work on these ones....

And yes... it's taking up valuable garden space. Hence why they need to go. bounce

Cut them down to a 2 foot stump, dig out around the roots a bit, wrap a chain around the stump and attach the other end of the chain to a motor vehicle and pull the sucker out.

I like oleander. It grows and blooms and provides green relief and protection from sun and wind in desert areas. You can tell kids to not eat it or tomato leaves.

Sounds like fun. Will probably just dig the suckers out the best we can, pray it doesn't grow back (yeah right), and do something else.

A lot of people like oleander. I'm not a fan of the plant. Neither is the Fiance.

I hate oleander. It can be beautiful but it is deadly. One leaf can kill a goat, a couple of leaves kill horses and cattle. I have had it happen and know of lots of others who have lost animals.

I will not even use compost that may have composted oleander in it(this include most municipal composts in this area). This maybe over reacting but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

If you burn it even the smoke is toxic. I won't have it on the property. If you want to get rid of it, tie it up in bags and send it to the land fill.

I know not to burn it. I need to know how I can kill the plant without affecting the surrounding soil and without it growing back. There's at least 5 of the darn things on the property.

I need it out of the soil.

You have to cut it down and then chop out the whole crown of the plant. That should take care of it but it is hard work I have heard.

I'm not afraid of the hard work. I just don't want them growing back.

+1! As much as I love them, I do understand having plants/trees/shrubs taking up valuable garden real estate. A rose is a weed if it is growing where you don't want it! If I were closer I would bring my 4WD over with a chain - sounds like my kind of fun!

Just spray the leaves of each of them with Round-up.

This works unless you want your garden to remain organic. But sometimes practicality overrides good intentions. What a Face

Except roundup doesn't kill these ones. It was tried already.

And goose? If you were closer and want to take a crack at it, go for it!!! lol I won't stop ya!

They are hard to kill. If you dig them out best you can, put weed cloth down, then sprinkle with sugar. The sugar will lock up the nitrogen so the area cannot have any. After probably several months, you can stop with the sugar, and plant something else. The sugar will wash away and soil will be fine.

How much sugar, well a sprinkle, and if you see a weed/greenery then do it again. You can use sugar to deter weeds around garden beds but not in the beds with veggies.
