Pickles
Could someone please tell me if you have to use a certain cucumber for pickles? I have two varieties... Burpless Bush Hybrid and one that actually says Pickling Cucumber. I apparently planted too many Burpless and not sure if I can pickle those too or what else I could do with them.

Re: Pickles
I use Spacemaster... good for table and pickles! And they don't grow taller than 5 feet. A plus for me.
This site suggests that burpless cukes are Ok to pickle when small, but as they mature, they make mushy pickles.

Re: Pickles
make a jar with the ones you have, and you'll know right away if you prefer them for pickling or fresh at the table. if you happen to prefer a particular kind fresh but want a pickle, make a fridge pickle instead of a canned pickle.
Re: Pickles
camp thanks for the info on burpless cucumbers becoming mushy....that may be why some of our pickles last year are a bit mushy....this year we planted pickling cucumbers....so i hope this helps out in the crunch we are looking for in a home can pickle....

Re: Pickles
Another thing to consider, make sure you cut the blossom end off the cukes before you pickle them... that is where the enzymes that make pickles mushy comes from. Wish I could remember where I heard that.

Re: Pickles
we did cut the blossom ends off and we scrub them too....
this year we are growing grapes so we can use a grape leaf in the jar with the cucumbers in hopes this will make them have a crunch.... ...read that this is suppose to help....

Re: Pickles
I've done both this season and preferred the pickling cukes over the burpless. The skin was a tad thicker on the burpless.
This was my first season to make pickles and I've been using the Ball brand pickle mixes (new formula for crunchier pickles) and the pickles are so crunchy!
