peach tree replacement Empty peach tree replacement

Post  Palmdale Steve 6/5/2012, 9:20 am

I live in the high desert part of L.A.County and am going to have to replace a peach tree this fall. The wind chill temperature gets down to -20 wintertime and the heat gets up to 110 in September. I'm looking for a peach tree variety that ripens in late August or September. Any suggestions and where could I get them?

I found this regarding the wind chill - it is basically the same information I remembered reading ages ago. Although wind will cause moisture loss more quickly, wind chill below freezing does not affect plants the way it does people. What you need to go by is your actual high and low temps. Because of the wind and desert conditions you should look for one of the hardier varieties listed within your growing zone. Believe me, you will be able to find something - a friend of mine has a peach tree here in South Dakota - Zone 3! She obviously protects it in winter (our lows are -30's, ACTUAL temp) but she has gotten a few peaches!
