I planted my pumpkins, squash, and melons in old tires

Same boxes, from the North looking to the South. The planter in front of the 2x2s has strawberries and marigolds.

We got a bunch of these mineral tubs for free. A few of them have vining tomatoes planted in them and we also used a bunch of these tubs for potatoes, which you can see to the South of the 3x6 box in the previous picture.

I tried to get a picture of the whole fenced in garden area but it is so big I couldn't really get the whole thing in the pic. The pumpkin/squash/melon patch is located to the east and isn't fenced in.

This is what I have so far. I'm wondering if the Romaine lettuce in the Salad garden can be harvest leaf by leaf or if I have to wait until the thing forms a head and cut the head. Any questions/comments appreciated. A LOT of hardwork has gone into this so far this year with much more to come.

Thanks for looking

I just searched for when you can harvest Romaine lettuce. Found a post that said once leaves are 6 inches you can harvest what you need from the outside leaves. Might have to measure mine been eatting Kale salads for a while now.

The Kale is ready for it's fifth harvest. I get enough kale to make 5 or more salads each harvest.

All I can say is WOW! Gorgeous garden.

How big are those mineral tubs? I'm going to try and find some of them. They look to have hand holds that would make them easier to handle.

And yes you can harvest the romaine a leaf at a time.

I'm not sure the exact size of the tubs but I'm guessing maybe 20-25 gallon or so, they are probably around 20-24inches across. This is my first year using them so I'm hoping everything turns out. So far the potatoes I have planted in them are growing like wildfire and with the vining tomatoes I think it will be relatively easy to build a support around the tubs, maybe something like a tee-pee.

Your hard work definitely shows in your garden!

Thanks for posting this. I've been wondering what other Wisconsin gardens look like. After seeing what my husband brought home from our first farmer's market of the season last week, it seems like my lettuces are growing at a snail's pace.

I planted tomatoes in similar blue mineral tubs last year and I did not have enough drain holes drilled...I would recommend drilling a good number of holes in both the bottom and sides...the soil will get rotten and stagnant if water is allowed to sit in the bottom.

Thanks for all the comments and advice. I'm going back out today to try to get some more things planted. I will post more pics when some things get closer to being ready for harvest. First year with any type of SFG and I can already see a great difference in the ease of keeping it weeded(although my compost must not have been done and I have weeds everywhere) and I can definitely see a big difference in the red cabbage. I have planted two starts in the SFG and two in the row garden and the 2 in the SFG are probably twice as big. Smile I will have to work on building more boxes and keeping up with my composting for next year so I can add more squares.
