Seeds sprouting already !! Empty Seeds sprouting already !!

Post  memart1 5/19/2012, 10:57 am

On May 10th I had nothing but an empty box. My granddaughter's fiance put the contents of a huge compost pile into it on the 11th. I spent the 12th and 13th shopping for plants, seeds, and a picked up an old vinyl blind from an apartment building a relative owns. I made my grids, and planted a few seeds on Monday, the 14th. I was surprised to see some radishes had sprouted already last night. And then this morning there were a few more! I felt like a kid at Christmas. Now I just want to pull up a chair and sit with a glass of iced tea and watch my garden grow!
Next year I want to dig out the compost, and replace it with MM, but compost will work for this year. Once I get this garden growing I will start to get the peat moss, vermiculite, and composts to make my MM for next year. I will probably screen some of what I dig out from this year's garden to use as one of the composts, and then get four others.
I plan to do more shopping today and get the electrical conduit and rebar for trellises. I ordered trellis netting on ebay and it should arrive today. I am having fun!!! Are you???

Mabel - there is just nothing like the feeling you get when you see those little green sprouts poking up their heads! Isn't it amazing how much you can accomplish in such a short time with this method? Post pics when you can so we can all celebrate your little greenies with you!

I had so much fun building my trellises out of conduit - the instructions in the book were so simple and they survived some incredible windstorms last season. They will last you a good long time.

I am enjoying the heck out of this so far! I have had some normal gardening setbacks- the cutworms and aphids, but the plants for the most part seem to be doing really well. I was so thrilled today to see that several of my tomatoes are getting flower blossoms! I have a couple of different types, so they don't all have flowers yet but they are coming! I want (sooooooo badly...) enough tomatoes so I can eat about a gazillion fresh tomato sandwiches- that's the big goal! Cool

I know what you mean about tomato sandwiches. I was out to lunch yesterday and ordered a BLT. It had no flavor whatsoever !! Can't wait for fresh homegrown tomatoes!

I am waiting to see how this garden works out. Back in 1999, when I first moved here I made a 4" x 12' bed, and started with the old SFG method. Everything was fine until the deer decided they also liked my garden. Overnight they ate almost everything. The next year I put a 4" high fence around the whole garden, but they jumped right into that narrow 4' wide space and had another feast. So I just gave up. Then last year my brother from Baltimore came to visit and brought some excess tomato plants from his garden. (I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania). I told him the deer ate everything, but he planted them in front of the bedroom section of my house anyway. Well I had a bumper crop and the deer did not bother them. So this year my son-in-law built me a 26" x 30" raised bed in that area, and filled it with compost from a huge pile I had. I decided to do SFG, and when I saw that Mel had an all-new book, I had to have it. Next year I want to dig out the compost and replace it with weedblock and MM, but so far, I'm having a blast! Here is a pic from last Monday.

There were only a few plants in and I was just starting to put seeds in. I have geraniums in the front corner and I have marigolds in all the half blocks in the front.Gradually I will put more things in and when I get my trellises in I will take more pics. Someone told me to put a bar of a strong smelling soap about 3 or 4 places in the garden and the deer will stay away. I'll wait till things are up before I try that though.
