Re: How far apart would you plant these
The pattipans I have grown have been a 'bush' type, which means no vining. If you are an aggressive pruner, you can get away with 1 per square with bush squash. If you do not want to have to prune the leaves continually to keep it contained it will need 4 squares for one plant, a 2x2 section. I have not gotten into pruning squash yet, so I am dedicating most of one box to just my bush squash - planting seeds tonight!

Even though I'm planning to prune a lot, I'm still hedging my bets and only planting 1 per 2 squares, on the outside edges so they can hang over if necessary.

Re: How far apart would you plant these
I am growing butternut squash for the 1st time.
I have them planted in a 2 1/2 x 6 rectangular box spaced and will be going up over a trellis and who knows where else. I read that they spread alot but I love eating butternut squash and wanted to try it. If I get alot then I will cut it up and freeze.
I also have pumpkins growing in a 2 1/2 x 5 1/2 rectangular box spaced with a trellis (waiting for hubby to put together). I have grown pumpkin (Med size) the previous 2 yrs and from 2 plants I get 3-4 which is enough. I do it more for fun and so I can give one to my grandson (child in photo).
Best of luck!

I am giving mine one square with trellis. I have grown them before and that was enough.

Chopper how many did you get from one plant. I am about to build a couple of more beds(4x8). I had thought to using the complete north row( 8 plants one square each, trellised of course). We love these squash. I believe they store well.

The problem with melons and the winter squashes is you do not get many per vine. I thiink I got two or three.
