Hi all -- I'm about to place my first 4x4 box, which has a chicken wire bottom to guard against groundhogs that I've had in my yard in the past.

Should I put the weed cloth on the ground and then the box with the wire on top or should I put the weed cloth inside the box on top of the wire?

I also built a chicken wire cover -- should I plan to weigh it down or maybe add an eye-hook to make sure critters don't get inside, or is the cover usually enough?

Hi there, I would staple the weed cloth to the bottom of the box first then staple the wire mesh over that. Then flip it over in the place you want it.

Cheers

For nearly 2 years the critter covers on my ground boxes have been enough. It seems to confuse the animals who don't know it could be pushed off. I have raccoon, coyote, deer, and cats. Also sustained 50 mph+ winds barely moved them an inch.
Surprisingly during similar heavy winds, a brand new tabletop w/critter cover was blown off repeatedly till I attached a small weight to it. The quick fix was baling wire wrapped around a fist sized rock hung from one side. It worked perfectly.

I flipped my boxes upside-down and stapled the wire hardware cloth onto the bottom. Then I flipped them back right-side-up and lined it with the weed block fabric which I also stapled into place. I wanted to prevent any side entry or MM loss since I used lanscape timbers instead of 2"x6"s. Wink

Yep - weedcloth inside of the boxes on top of the wire - as moldeen85 said, it keeps your Mel's Mix in your box that way too.

Eye hook for keeping on the critter cage sounds like a good idea. That's what I would do!

Thanks for the tip! Since I already stapled the wire to the bottom on the box, it looks like it will have to got inside with some staples. Maybe I'll start with the wire wrapped rock and add eye hooks when I'm feeling ambitious!

funny post
I can get away with the extreme tacky look since it is on the backside of the box and faces a pasture. Plus the cinder block legs are pretty wide and obscures the view from the the front of the box. Weed cloth and wire-bottom box 370856013
