A pole bean has a long vining pattern of growth, it is also known as a
runner type bean and needs vertical support. The yard long bean is an
Asian sub species of the cow pea, which is a type of bean. The fruit can
grow from 1-3 feet in length. This type of bean does need vertical
support.

Hi AvaD

I grow the "Gita" variety (from Johnny's seed). It's amazingly prolific, producing beans all summer. The more you pick the more you get.

They are great used as any bean would be, or stir fried “Chinese Style”. When picked young (about 10-16”, or the diameter of a pencil) they are tender and full of flavor.

I highly recommend giving them a try. This photo shows my 2011 crop being grown to a trellis. They produced up to our first frost in October.

My DIL being Philippina wanted the yard long beans so I set up 4 squares and trellis for her last year. They produced well. Just don't let the beans get too fat.

This year she requested double the amount. Very Happy

I am growing yard long beans in the greenhouse as part of the rotation in there. They came up really well and have a few leaves but seem to just sit there. They have not started vining. Are they really long to reach that point and then take off? I know they like heat, but it is hot enough for tomatoes to set fruit in there. Do they maybe like okra type heat before they get going? The okra are in wall o waters, I suppose I could do that also for the beans.

Yard Long Bean Empty Yard longs

Post  tmiller 8/9/2012, 2:30 pm

Have grown yard-longs for several years. First year, prolific vines & harvest. Second year (row over/2 ft from previous) prolific vines, only half harvest of previous year. This year, prolific vines (diff location, similar sun/shade/sandy soil) barely any harvest thus far. All posts/lines approx 6 ft. height. Seems they're overshadowing & strangling each other. Should I clip every other plant at base? Use bloom buster food or general food? Just wait a little longer? thinking

Our "Yard-Long" beans are disappointing. Yard Long Bean 950477
Maybe the container was too shallow, or maybe they shouldn't have been planted in the same container with other bean varieties? Yard Long Bean 601593

My chinese red noodle beans start taking off immediately upon sowing. I get flowers when temps hit 75 and continue to get growth with temps above 100. And they're tasty raw and stir-fried.

I started planting them last year for my grand daughter, She runs to the garden for her "green spaghetti". Long but thin is the rule. Delicious raw, steamed or stir fried.
