carrot or Queen Anne Lace?
I have never seen what a carrot looks like coming out of the ground. Is this a carrot or QAL? If carrot, I'll stick it back in:

Yup that's a carrot. quick! stick it back in the ground! Mine always take longer than what the package describes as 'days to harvest'.

OK, what's so funny, you guys...? Was I really not suppose to stick it back in the dirt? Because as soon as I read camps post, I ran outside and did it.

Looks like a carrot to me, too! But I would've eaten it!

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
But I don't have enuff of them to eat them so small.
That one came out of a radish square, which is why I wasn't sure what it was, so it was an escapee anyway. Probably blew in there back in March when I did the first carrot square next to the radishes, so it's not a carrot week carrot.
Will it keep growing or should I go get it?

How are all the Carrot Week carrots doing? Mine are pluggin right along. I've lost a few to wind and pests, and should probably do some thinning but I think I'll just leave em be and see what I come up with.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Took a close look at all the carrot tops this morning. Noticed the stems were smooth but 2 plants had little hairy bristles, pulled it up and it was the carrot imposter, the white roots of queen anne's lace. I admit to putting both plants on a brick to fry in the sun for wasting precious nutrients. The real carrots are coming along nicely but not big enough to pull.

The tops of my carrots are 8" or so. Is there a correlation with bottom size?

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
I don't think so. There have been years when I have fabulous foliage and no great carrot under ground. I usually try to look for the root shoulders to give me a clue.Windsor.Parker wrote:The tops of my carrots are 8" or so. Is there a correlation with bottom size?

My flag day carrot and first non cherry tomato
They are small but still coming.
I'm still eating out of the patch planted early November.

Dang nice carrots, Landarch! My leaves aren't even as big as Roosters yet.
At least yours are orange, Kay. I pulled up an older one planted before carrot week and it was a long skinny white carrot. I put it back in the dirt to orange up but it doesn't look like it made it.
Nice tip to look at the shoulders, camp. I didn't know that.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
I am presuming that no one has harvested yet from the Carrot Week plantings?
I figure mine should be ready to harvest around 12th July or later...
Landarch....... when did you plant those that you harvested

I didn't know about the "Carrot Week" plantings.
But I planted three successive beds of carrots in late August/early September last year. These were planted thickly. We started harvesting in December, and have harvested continuously since then. I am working on the last bed now, and figure we should have fresh carrots until about mid-July.
Because they are planted thickly, they do not get large very quickly. But as I pull the larger ones, the smaller ones get room to grow. So each bed will be harvested over a period of two or three months.
Maybe with some tuning, we can get a year-round supply of fresh carrots.

I'll pull up one of mine as soon as another zone 6'er pulls up theirs.
Are we thinking mid July, 6'ers?

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Im 5b or 6. I am just counting 70 days after my they sprouted which would be 12th July. But may leave them longer. I have some chantenay that I should be harvesting this week but the odd one I have pulled isnt too big so i am leaving them longer.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
The number of days on the package is just a ballpark figure. Don't pull your carrots just because it's been 70 days. I pulled back a little soil today and see some orange finally!!

I think I planted early to mid march. I planted second round of seeds in a few squares that I am letting grow a bit more just to see how they do in the summer heat.
