Many of my questions have already been answered by previously posted topics, but I can think of a ton more questions.

I have three 4x4 squares. I used a free trial of this vegetable garden planner and made a rough plan for what I am growing. Since this is my first time, and I know that probably all will not go as planned, some things might change.
Here it is though. The sides with the tomatoes have trellises.

I started the lettuce and onions from seed indoors and put them both outside probably a week ago while they were still pretty small (I was running out of space under my lamps because I don't actually have grow lights, I have just been using fluorescent bulbs in some lamps). I really can't say how they are doing because I have never grown lettuce or onions before and don't know what they are supposed to look like really.
I planted some carrot seeds outside today and I decide to try to grow some potatoes in between the two front garden beds in a trash bag. Have you ever grown potatoes in a container?

I've never grown potatoes in a container, I have a 3 x 6 SFG that I grow them in, and last year and this year I've layered them. I've planted white potatoes in the first 6 inches and then added a 1x4 "high rise" on top of that and planted red potatoes. Keep me posted at how you do with yours in the containers.

Your method sounds neat. I just made a last minute decision to plant potatoes and had heard about doing it in a trash bag or a bucket, so I decided to give it a try. I will let you know how it goes.

Some of the potatoes that I planted were just ones that had sprouted in our pantry and I also had a few seed potatoes that my neighbor gave me. We'll see what happens.

The carrot seeds that I bought were some kind of mixture of colorful carrots. I will have to look at the package to see the specific names.

What is a nante carrot?

I must have spelled it wrong, it's spelled with an S, Nantes, they are a shorter type carrot, last year mine grew fine in the 6 inch deep SFG, taste good too.

Did you get any of that cold weather the last couple of days?
We had a really heavy frost this morning.

The carrots that I got are labeled kaleidoscope mix and on the back it says it contains 20% of each: atomic red, bambino, cosmic purple, solar yellow, and lunar white. I got it because I thought that it would be cool to have all the different colored carrots. I will have to try the Nantes carrots sometime though.
Yeah we have been having some cold weather. There has been a frost almost every night for the past few days.

Someone had an avatar or a circle of those color carrots, they looked really cool too, be sure to post some pictures of them. I've got some black ones planted.

What kind of tomatoes are you going to plant?

The frost almost got my cotton plants, I covered them the first two nights we had frost and then we were going to get a really heavy frost so I just took the little plants back up and it was a good thing I did.

Since all the different seeds were mixed together, I wasn't really sure which ones were which. I tried to Plant ones that looked different in order to get all the different colors. I've never seen a black carrot. I bet that's pretty cool. How many seeds would you recommend to put in each spot were you want one carrot to grow? In case some don't germinate.
I have federle, brownberry, and beefsteak seedlings growing inside right now. What kind do you like to grow? Somebody let me borrow an old, rusty grow light shelf that they weren't using, so now I have more space for my tomato, pepper, and okra seedlings indoors. I was starting to run out of desk lamps and counter tops, haha.
My mom had a pot of basil outside that she bought as transplants and we forgot to bring it in and it died. I think that everything else is fine though. I don't think that the frosts we got were that heavy.

When I plant my carrot seeds, I try to just plant no more than 2 or 3, but since they are so small I may drop in more than I wanted to. Since your growing in Mel's Mix, use a pair of scissors to cut the unwanted extra carrots out that sprout, if you try pulling them out, sometimes all of them come out, and if you do what I did, and not thin them out to just one, you end up with something like this.


I've got Beefsteak, Super Beefsteak, Black Pearl and some Box Car Willie tomatoes, and one kind that is suppose to have really big ugly tomatoes on it

The peppers seeds that I have are also a mixture. I don't remember what the names where, but the picture on the front had yellow, red, green, and purple bell peppers. I also had some other smaller peppers. They might be called fish, not sure though.
I was hoping to start most things from seeds, but if some things don't work out then I will probably end up buying transplants. I don't think my peppers are doing very well. The leaves don't look very good and they aren't growing very quickly.

My peppers are growing very slowly as well. They look ok, just staying very small right now. I'm assuming cool nights are the holdup.

Since my mom got a small greenhouse this year I have started all my plants from seeds too.

What kind of peppers are you growing Kay?

Green bell, yellow cayenne, yellow bell, purple bell, chocolate bell, chocolate habenero, red bell, red cayenne, red scorpian, sweet banana, and hot banana. The yellow cayenne is from seed saved from last year and the habenero and red scorpian I started from seed. My son has all of the above, plus orange bell, orange habenero, jalepeno, and ghost(from seed). We made some awesome pepper jelly last year for Christmas gifts and hope to make some again this year. That is why there is a match up in colors between the hot and sweet.

I haven't put mine outside yet. I am hoping they will grow bigger once I do. But we will see...

I haven't put any pepper plants outside yet but I was planning to in the nest couple weeks. I think I picked that package of seeds up at lowes. I hope one of the seeds that I sprouted is one of the purple kind, or maybe you would say black, I'm not really sure. But I will be super excited if I get any kind of pepper plant to mature out of what I've got now. I am hoping once I transplant them outdoors they will do better.

I have three four by four foot boxes. And then I also have the potatoes that I am growing in trash bags with drainage holes in the bottom. The potatoes are actually doing pretty well as far as I can tell. Green leaves keep coming up through the soil and I keep putting more soil on top.
