Slanted trellis for cantaloupe? Empty Slanted trellis for cantaloupe?

Post  CarolinaGirl 4/4/2012, 6:34 pm

So I'd already planted my cantaloupe in a square before I discovered I could trellis them. I planted them on the south side of the box so I obviously can't really build a vertical trellis without blocking the sun to the stuff behind it. Sooo I'm thinking maybe I can have a leaning type trellis that will lean out to the south side but not block the other plants from getting sun, if that makes sense?Slanted trellis for cantaloupe? Image289
This is what I'm thinking... that left point would sit against the box and then it could climb up to the high point of the triangle. Seems like it would be a nice compromise for this year and next year I'll plant it on the north side lol. How long do you think the "long/C side" needs to be? I got it as a started plant (Bonnie plant from Home Depot), Sweet 45 variety. This is the spacing info I've found:
Height:
6-12 in. (15-30 cm)
Spacing:
4-6 ft. (1.2-1.8 m)
Based on this I would make the long side/C 6ft if no one was around to tell me otherwise. Thinking the b side of the triangle would maybe be 2ft tall. I'd probably make the entire thing 4 ft wide to allow for side spread (???).

It also seems like if I make it sturdy and detachable I can flip it up so it's sitting on the b side and up against the box next year to have the cantaloupe climb vertically up it next year.

Will it block access to the bed too much having a trellis on 2 sides?

This is the bed in question: Slanted trellis for cantaloupe? 547158_10100130320633414_21308174_42591168_1907720811_n
The other side has a pepper plant that will be staked. Although now that I've said that I realize my bed is only 4ft wide lol... so maybe 4ft wide won't work lol. The sqaure to the left of it is a bush green bean with a harvest of 50 days and the cantaloupe is 80-88 days.

I've read it's better if the cantaloupe fruit don't sit on the ground so I'm just trying to figure something out.. also if it allows me to mow the area underneath then that's even better! Yes something like that sfg4uKim, but would probably need to be like cattle panel as the fruit would need somewhere to go. Then I could just sling them.

If you decide to let the melon just sprawl on the ground, you can always put a paper plate under the developing fruit. What a Face

Would I have to replace the paper plate after every rain? I assume the point of keeping them off the ground is to stop them from sitting in the damp, seems like a paper plate would just get wet and essentially be the same thing?

Mostly it provides a barrier from the bugs on the ground. You could also use cardboard, or regular boards, some folks use ceramic tiles or bricks or pine needles.

How about a cattle panel arch to trellis your melons up? Like this or some such: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/vertical/msg0622582022244.html

[b]Walshevak, wonderful trellis! Did you use net with the conduit? Anxious to see more as your plants start weaving up the trellis.

Here is what I did for my slanted trellis. It is actually pivot-able
I can go either way with it and its on the south side of my box.
I had Punkins and Cukes on it last year.

First picture bottom right corner is one of the hinged connections.

This is the whole thing hiding behind my Pea trellis.
Slanted trellis for cantaloupe? SFG-06-07-11

This is an addition i pit on for the pumpkin plants, we got 3 last year 2 that
were adult head sized and one a bit bigger than a soft ball. The add on is
actually hinged at the bottom and folds flat to the rest of the trellis when
not needed.
