would chicken wire work?
I'm wondering if the holes in chicken wire would be so large that voles could get through it. Does anyone have experience with chicken wire as opposed to hardware cloth? Thanks.

I don't think it would be much of any hindrance to a vole, it's amazing how small a hole rodents can get through.

Voles have no problem getting through chicken wire.
I am my gardens worst enemy.

A vole is like the size of a large mouse and it can get through the small holes in chicken wire. I doubt it would do much more than tickle his back.

Ok, thanks for all the good info. I already had some old CW, but will go get some hardware cloth to use instead. I'm glad I asked.

I put hardware cloth on the bottom of all the raised beds....
I also used hardware cloth for my chickens too - it keeps out all kinds of predators and critters !!!

If you do have a problem with voles, hardware cloth would definitely keep them from tunneling underneath. You could also have a couple of rat traps laying around the perimeter of your boxes. Use store-bought tomato chunks for bait. I guarantee that you'll trap them.

Here's Squat's advice on voles - it's a great read.
