Quail Manure

I am new to gardening, period! I have read till my eyes are crossed. My question of the day is in regards to quail manure. Can it be used ASAP (like rabbit poo) or does it need time to break down, etc, like many of the hot manures. Shocked

I have access to free quail manure and was hoping to add it the compost I am filling my SFG with, today. Thanks!

I read on a quail farmers site...

Quail poop is like brown gold for your
garden. It’s low on odor and isn’t very messy to deal with. Shovel up
your excess quail manure each week and move it to a garden manure bin to
age until it breaks down before using it on plants. It is high in
nitrogen, and when fresh, it can burn plants. In the heat of the summer,
if the manure does emit much odor, a light covering of lime will
eliminate it and sweeten the pile.

I am assuming since you are going to be able to get a bunch of it to add to your mix that the manure is coming from a farmer... is that correct? Ask the farmer if it is composted and let us know the answer Wink

I'd be reluctant to go with uncomposted bird manure...especially if the birds eat seed. I have some pigeons and since they are messy eaters, bird seed inevitably finds its way in to the manure (mainly through splashing at the feed trough).

I think I'd compare quail manure to chicken rather than rabbitt. Jo

Even if you can't use it directly on your garden this time, what a SCORE. We are always trying to find new sorces of poo for our compost piles.

Another consideration:
Forum member Odd Duck, who is a vet, cautioned about using the droppings of wild birds because of the potential pathogens danger.

Hot composting might kill the pathogens, but few homeowners can keep their compost hot enough, long enough so that all of the compost is cooked.

I don't know either way, just passing the information along.

Thanks for the valuable input. The poo is from a small quail farm. Some is a lot older than what is on top...but I certainly wouldn't call it composted. I am trying to gather info on local folks that will give away their various types of manure...one less thing to have to buy.

Interesting thought regarding possible diseases... I will do some more research before brining any home! thanks again!

I would think if the manure is from something that is being "farmed" vs "wild" it would be treated the same as chicken manure.
I can understand not wanting to use manure from any sort of animal in the wild, but if they're domesticated and living in close proximity to humans in clean conditions, they most likely aren't harboring the same pathogens/parasites.
